Role: Project Manager – Environmental Assessments for the Water Sector

Location: Hybrid – Harwell, London, Glasgow, Bristol, Manchester  

Salary range: £35,000 – £50,000

We are currently looking for a Project Manager to join our Water team.

Key responsibilities

  • To manage portfolios of projects associated with environmental assessment related to the water sector.
  • Lead and manage a range of projects – an average portfolio might include 1-2 large projects ranging from £250 – £500K+ plus a range of smaller technically-specific focused projects across a range of water and ecology disciplines.
  • Project management that includes ensuring the necessary project data and information (such as risks and issues and financial and resource forecasts) are fed through the appropriate channels and systems, as part of the regular cycle of management and reporting.
  • Deliver a client-facing role to articulate the linkages between different technical strands of work and establish strong relationships that demonstrate our overall technical experience.
  • As part of this role, it is also expected that the project manager will be able to identify both extensions to current work and potential new opportunities for discussion with Ricardo’s Senior team and Project Directors.

Key competencies and experience

  • Project management skills related to budgeting, resource management and delivery for both internal and client facing processes and programmes.
  • An understanding of the water sector primarily in the UK.
  • An awareness that encompasses, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), water resources environmental assessment (including for example, Water Framework Directive, Habitat Regulation Assessment, Natural Capital and Biodiversity Net Gain), plus ecology and water quality programmes that support UK water companies, water regulators, government and local authority clients.
  • Have a relevant degree that ideally demonstrates a sound overall environmental background.
  • Preferably a professional qualification in project management.
  • Experience of project management from a consultancy perspective.
  • A track record of managing all elements of water and environmental projects from start to finish.
  • The ability to manage of a range of multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience of building and maintaining relationships with customers through project and bidding activities
  • A proven track record of resource management to ensure the appropriate capability and capacity is available from the technical teams across multiple projects.
  • Sufficient technical understanding to support our technical leads and specialists to integrate complex work strands.
  • Experience of stakeholder communications and management including pulling together presentations for clients to support technical leads.
  • Ability to develop follow-on work and new opportunities as they arise from existing work.
  • Ability to provide solutions to customer problems.

  • An effective and collaborative approach to working with the project team, water companies, developers, design engineers, sub-contractors/contractors, planners, and regulators to help achieve positive outcomes for projects
  • Excellent team working skills together with strong communication skills and a close attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to drive a project forward within budget and on time
  • The necessary IT skills to ensure that appropriate internal and external project management data and information is compliant and delivered as required
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated to thrive in this busy and demanding environment whilst at the same time work closely with Project Directors and teams from a range of disciplines.
