The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) is looking for a Scientific Programmer to join our team. This is a hybrid position with the flexibility to work remotely and an expectation to work from our Arlington, MA office a minimum of 1 week per month.

Position Overview

The Scientific Programmer is a member of the technical staff at the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI).  As an active member of an interdisciplinary team of hydrology researchers and software engineers, the Scientific Programmer will engage in the design, development, and communication of software to support research and education in the water sciences. Primary activities will focus on establishing innovative cloud solutions to support earth surface data archival, hydrologic model simulations, and community cloud computing. The Scientific Programmer will provide technical support and general knowledge of CUAHSI services to both internal and external parties, and communicate project requirements, designs, and results to technical audiences.

Essential Job Functions

  • Works with CUAHSI technical staff to develop software and tools to support hydrologic modeling, data analysis, cloud-computing, and earth surface data archival.
  • Builds, optimizes, and maintains complex software applications using a variety of programming techniques and technologies.
  • Collaborates with water scientists and engineers to design, build, and maintain applications; assisting with all aspects of software design and coding.
  • Utilizes creativity and innovation to independently solve conceptual programming problems raised by cutting-edge water research.
  • Provides technical and industry expertise to the internal CUAHSI team as well as outside collaborators.

Non-Essential Job Functions

  • Occasional travel within the to participate in CUAHSI meetings and events.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in software engineering, computer science (or equivalent technical degree), or a Master of Science in water or environmental science and strong software engineering skills.
  • Exposure to and/or expertise in hydrology and related disciplines in the Earth sciences.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python or R preferred).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and self-teach.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with front-end web development using modern frameworks such as React, Angular, Vue, etc.
  • Experience using scientific data formats (Shapefile, NetCDF, HDF, etc) and cloud native formats.
  • Experience developing and using cloud architectures for scientific applications.
  • Experience using Geographic Information Systems and spatial data in scientific applications.
  • Knowledge of and experience using physically-based hydrologic models.
  • Experience with software containerization.
  • Experience developing software that runs on Linux operating systems.
  • Experience developing and deploying software in commercial cloud environments (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services).
  • Experience using SQL and NoSQL databases.
