Junior advisor/ researcher Hydraulic Structures (Renewal & Renovation)

Do you have a strong interested in hydraulic structures like sluices, weirs, and storm surge barriers? Are you interested in analytics and science, but also like to apply this in the real world in research and advisory projects for various clients? Then, this position could very well be of interest to you.

What can you expect as junior advisor / researcher?
Your main task is to research how to quantify performance of structures as (aging) objects themselves and their functioning as part of the water systems to support governments and waterboards in their decision making to renew or replace the structures. This will require considering various factors such as climate change, economic trends, legislation and requirements for future design. 

Together with experienced advisors and researchers you advise by developing knowledge, methods and tools to support Renewal & Renovation and the Rethink the Delta initiative. Tasks you can expect include:

  • Carrying out desk studies, data analyses, programming (e.g. Python routines), use of data platforms like Delft-FEWS, and hydrodynamic modelling;
  • Writing attractive research and project proposals;
  • Building and maintaining a professional network with research partners and clients;
  • Communicating your results to partners, clients and stakeholders via most suitable channels that could be technical reports, publications, video’s, social media, presentations, conference contributions, marketing materials etc.

Your team
You will be part of the department Hydraulics for Infrastructure & Industry. With our top-level knowledge of hydrodynamics and infrastructure, we contribute to innovative future-proof solutions for societal challenges in the field of hydraulic engineering and industry. We are shaping agendas. We do this in a pleasant working atmosphere, together with our Deltares colleagues and strategic knowledge partners. Our main client is Rijkswaterstaat.
What we expect from a junior researcher/advisor

  • You have a relevant MSc or Phd and have already developed a good understanding  of hydraulic structures and the roles they have in the water systems in which they are embedded;
  • Our clients are mainly Dutch. Writing reports and meetings require a fluency in Dutch;
  • Developing methods and tools for quantitative analyses making use of your Python skills is what you like to do;
  • You are result-oriented and have an eye for quality;
  • Your social and communicative skills are excellent and you want to apply these skills to cooperate and co-create with colleagues and clients.
