Role Context

Incredible things happen when land and water meet to create wetlands. Wetlands teem with biodiversity, providing homes for endangered and much-loved species. Wetlands are vital ‘service stations’ for millions of migratory birds, enabling them to rest and refuel, and for us, they provide essential protection against the impacts of the climate crisis, floods, droughts and pollution. Over recent centuries, England alone has lost approximately 90% of its wetlands, and in more recent times their continuing absence – coupled with further loss and degradation – has helped to fuel some of the greatest challenges we face: the escalating climate crisis, plummeting levels of biodiversity and a rapid decline in our own wellbeing.

WWT are pioneers in wetland conservation. We use ground-breaking science to bring species and wetlands back from the brink and restore, protect and create wetlands around the world. In the UK, we have established a rich portfolio of exciting wetland projects, focusing on the creation, restoration and management of wetland ecosystems and the restoration of species within them.

We aim to be part of the transformative change that will be needed to address the globe’s environmental, societal and economic challenges and are now planning some of the most significant and impactful wetland projects ever seen in this country. We need the leadership of an excellent Head of UK Programmes to drive forward this exciting new phase in WWT’s history and to lead on the delivery of our programmes of work.

Role outline

Your role will lead the delivery of a wide range of exciting projects based in the UK to have maximum impact for the benefit of wetland nature and WWT’s conservation programmes, building and engaging with partner organisations to build the reputation and position of WWT in the UK. You will be responsible for ground-breaking wetland projects offering nature-based solutions, adopting new and innovative approaches to cutting-edge conservation.

We need someone who can provide inspiring and professional leadership for the UK Programmes department and to work with a multi-functional team of renowned practitioners, project developers, scientists, communicators, fundraisers and policy advocates across WWT to have maximum impact for wetland conservation. Senior managerial level experience of managing a successful large-scale programme of work and monitoring delivery of targets and impact will also be essential.

It is anticipated that you will be a recognised leader, with experience in the field of wetland or water-related conservation, current thinking and trends in the sector. The successful candidate will be at the heart of one of the most impactful conservation organisations in the UK, and will need to be inspiring, collaborative, diplomatic and energetic.
