WaterAid Australia is inviting expressions of interest to fill three vacancies on its Board of Directors from August 2019.

We are looking for Directors with a passion for WaterAid’s vision and are seeking to appoint:

  • one or two individuals with skills and experience in international aid and development and NGO programming, including but not limited to WASH, gender and experience in the Pacific
  • one or two individuals with skills and experience in responding to current and future trends in strategic market planning and engagement for fundraising and donor growth outcomes to drive growth and sustainability

WaterAid Australia is committed to having a balanced Board in terms of gender and with a diversity of experience, backgrounds and personal attributes.

We strongly encourage female applicants and applicants who are from the countries where WaterAid Australia operates (Timor-Leste, PNG and Cambodia) and are Australia based. At this stage, we are not accepting applications from candidates based overseas.

WaterAid Australia and the Board of Directors

WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone, everywhere has access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. WaterAid’s mission is to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people by improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Everything WaterAid does is shaped by our six values: accountability; collaboration; courage; innovation; integrity; and respect.

WaterAid Australia’s Board has ten Directors, made up of representatives of the Australian water industry, those with experience in aid and development, and those with specific skills in areas including fundraising, communication and governance.

More information on WaterAid Australia’s work and the current Board of Directors is available at www.wateraid.org/au/

Requirements of Directors

In addition to attending quarterly Board Meetings in Melbourne, Directors are required to serve on and attend the quarterly meetings of one or two of the Board’s Committees. Directors are expected to commit time to studying papers, preparing for and attending meetings, following up on specific tasks with other Directors and liaising with the Chief Executive or other staff at the Chair’s or Chief Executive’s request. Directors are also expected to be active advocates of WaterAid’s work.

In total, this commitment is likely to take 10 to 15 days per year (the schedule of meetings for 2019-2021 is available upon request). All meetings are held in Melbourne.

In addition, international travel to visit our country programs is encouraged for all Board members, normally at least once per three-year term, for one week.

Remuneration

Board members work on a pro-bono basis and are not entitled to any remuneration for their role as Director. WaterAid Australia will meet or reimburse Directors for any reasonable travel and accommodation expenses incurred as part of that Director performing their duties on behalf of the organisation.

Term of appointment

The term of the appointment is for three years, beginning in August 2019 with the possibility of renewal for a further three years.
