IUCN China Office was established in year 2003. Since then IUCN serves as a technical advisory body on policy, legal and economic issues. It acts as a bridge between government, civil society and business and facilitates China’s engagement with the international community on key issues in China.



The internship position is expected to comply with the IUCN Asia Region Annexe to the Delegation of Authority: (DoA: Asia Annexe), current at any particular time, and the sub-delegations issued thereof. Such compliance must be exercised with due diligence and regard for the letter, spirit and purpose of the DoA.


Under overall guidance from the China Program Officer, and working in close collaboration with other staff members in the office, the programme assistant will assist with daily project management and administration, implementation of IUCN China programme, and assist with related functional areas such as communications for China office. The work undertaken is mainly to support the development and implementation of project activities managed by China programme, including the development and producing of contracts, payments and reports, monitoring and bookkeeping of project finances, coordinating meetings and workshops, assisting primary research, and assisting project concept and proposal writing as appropriate. 


  • Assist in the implementation of various ongoing projects and initiatives (e.g. Green List, the China PA initiative, the GEP initiative) in China, such as workshop organization and facilitation, partner contract development and report review, drafting donor reports, and consultation with partners and experts etc, and contribute to knowledge and communications products;
  • Assist in the needed logistics, preparation and execution of the IUCN events in China, including the logistics of the meetings and workshops, invitation and registration of the participants and speakers, refreshments and food etc, as well as discussion with and management of vendors.
  • Assist in the management and recruitment of office volunteers etc to expand the supporters of the IUCN to help with the branding and programme implementation.
  • Assist in the production of press releases and other communications materials from the programme perspectives and help with the regular update on the IUCN websites.
  • Provide support to develop various needed documentation such as proposals for the new projects, and assist and participate in the inception of the new projects. 
  • Carry out any other relevant tasks that may be requested by the China Programme Coordinator, including the maintenance of staff time management system, the production of integrated monthly reports etc.

Please Note: The above TOR contains the main responsibilities and duties of this position. However in an ever evolving organisation such as IUCN staff members are expected to show flexibility in their approach to work and be willing to undertake other tasks that are reasonably allocated to them but which are not part of their regular TOR. Where any task becomes a regular part of staff member’s responsibilities, the TOR should be changed in consultation between the manager, the staff member and the HR Unit. Any one of the three may initiate the consultation.


  • Bachelor or master degree in a discipline relevant to English, economics, finance, natural or social sciences.
  • Ability to work under pressure with limited supervision, and willingness to undertake travel
  • Native Chinese speaker, excellent in English speaking and writing.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Organized and self-motivated
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
