Local recruitment: Environmental Engineer – Permit Writer

NEIWPCC and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) are seeking a full-time Environmental Engineer to provide technical expertise and program support for the Bureau of Water Permits as part of the Drinking Water Source Protection Program (DWSP2).

The primary goal of Source Water Protection in New York State is to develop and implement source water protection measures for public water systems throughout the state. The incumbent will be expected to apply knowledge of the Clean Water Act and State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit program in developing individual SPDES permits. The successful candidate will assist with (or be trained to assist with) SPDES permit development, reviewing engineering reports, conducting water quality and effluent evaluations at wastewater treatment facilities, and potentially other duties as assigned. The incumbent will also assist with internal DWSP2 coordination to ensure the Department’s permitting and other processes include source water protection components. Infrequent field work or overnight travel may be necessary. The position is located in Albany, NY.

The successful candidate will hold a degree in engineering, engineering technology, environmental sciences with a recognized concentration in engineering, or a related field. Preferred experiences and competencies include: an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate, or interest in pursuing this certification; excellent verbal and written communication skills; computer proficiency in database development and maintenance, including geographic information systems and water quality modeling; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team, all while staying organized and maintaining accurate records.

This full-time position is based in the NYSDEC office, located at 625 Broadway, Albany, NY. After six months of employment, this position may be eligible for a partial telework schedule, subject to approval and determined by program and office needs.
