Role
Do you have a genuine interest in keeping land and water resources safe and sustainable in our communities and have the skills to complete water monitoring activities? Do you enjoy outdoor field-orientated work, are comfortable around water, and able to perform duties in all types of weather conditions?
Reporting to Water Monitoring Supervisors, the Water Quality Technologist will be part of the ambient environmental monitoring team located in Edmonton, and will be involved in projects throughout the province, with concentrations in northern Alberta watersheds. Applying your skills and knowledge, you will participate in all areas of environmental ambient monitoring covered by this office (hydrometric, meteorological, surface water quality and groundwater). Specifically, the position will concentrate on the execution of ambient Surface Water Quality (SWQ) monitoring activities within the current Department plan and mandate, resulting in the safe, efficient and accurate gathering of data. All data collected is to national standards to use in the assessment and management of water resources, including critical flood, drought and emergency monitoring, compliance, scientific studies, public safety and ecosystem/watershed protection. Utilizing your strong organizational, and time management skills as well as the ability to provide innovative ideas, problem solve and manage projects, will allow you to identify process enhancement opportunities to pursue continuous improvement and performance measurement. This data collection, utilizing various instrumentation, equipment and sampling techniques, will be used to ensure Alberta’s surface water is a safe and sustainable resource and to help maintain its condition. The position will also be required to respond to environmental emergencies.
To ensure success in the role, you will possess excellent communication and team-working skills to work effectively with other staff and the public while in the field. This position is highly visible, therefore people may raise many questions and concerns with you. The ability to problem solve independently will be essential as troubleshooting may be required in remote areas. The ability to work independently (alone) and within a team as well as strong organizational skills is also essential for the successful candidate in this position.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Two-year technical diploma in a water related Environmental area
- Four (4) years related field and office experience undertaking all aspects of water quantity monitoring
- Valid class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent)
- Must have the ability to swim
- Proficiency and experience with MS Office Applications including technical software applications is required, (e.g., various multirole calibration/programming software).
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Preference will be given to those with:
- Current designation or eligibility for professional or technical association membership or designation is preferred (e.g. CET, or P.Biol.).
- The following required safety certifications: Standard First Aid, Defensive Driver, Collision Avoidance, Trailering, WHMIS, TDG, Marine Emergency Duty / Small Vessel Operator Proficiency training and cold-water survival, Wildlife Awareness, Swift Water Rescue, and Ice Safety Technician.

Salary
$2,445.61 to $3,221.06 bi-weekly: ($63,830 to $84,069 annually)

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Please Note: This is a full time permanent position located in Edmonton. A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required to operate specialized vehicles e.g. boats, snow machines, ATVs. Our Water Quality teams travel in helicopters and as such, you must be comfortable with flights and heights. This position will require you to work outside in adverse weather and road conditions, and be exposed to various domestic animals and wildlife. Ability to swim is fundamentally important. Long hours and/or weekend work may become necessary in the field at any time and therefore flexibility is essential.

About Your Work Environment:
In this role, you will be working in an office/lab/warehouse setting located in Edmonton. However, you will be primarily working in the field and be required to travel to remote areas under a wide range of conditions using 4X4 trucks, helicopters, boats, snowmobiles, ATV’s, canoes, and trailers.
