APEM is a global environmental consultancy, we work with a range of clients including large corporations and governments to help them understand, mitigate and solve complex and technically challenging environmental projects in the UK and globally.

Our successful pioneering work has attracted investment and enabled us to grow and combine forces with other businesses who share our ethos and integrity. At our core, our people are working towards the protection of wildlife across the globe.

Why join us?

You will join a dedicated team of scientists who combine deep knowledge of the freshwater ecosystem with pragmatic ability to find solutions and help to care for the wildlife in our rivers and streams.

The role will be varied and challenging and sits within an expanding fisheries team that is well respected across the industry. We pride ourselves on our scientific rigour to inform management decisions for an array of clients such as regulators, rivers trusts, water companies and developers. The projects you will manage and support on will be diverse in nature, yet have a focus on freshwater fisheries conservation, restoration and design, with opportunities to work across multidisciplinary teams (e.g., hydrology, geomorphology, restoration engineering, water quality).

The role may include instream mitigation design, fish passage optioneering, baseline fisheries survey design, and monitoring to assess the potential impacts from major infrastructure schemes and provide options for mitigation. Fisheries monitoring will cover standard baseline assessment methods (e.g. electric fishing, seine and fyke netting etc.), as well as migratory fish tagging and tracking methods, in addition to screening, fish rescue and relocation projects. We have a national team with opportunities to support on fieldwork in Scotland, Wales, England, and Ireland.

About the role

With the support of APEM’s highly experienced fisheries team you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of tendering and project activity including fisheries survey design, stakeholder and client engagement, data review/data collation and data analysis and interpretation. You will work with clients, large and small to help them carry out fish ecology assessment requirements and will provide expert input into a wide range of fisheries assessments (e.g. scientific and scoping reports, EIA, HRA reports, WFD assessments).

You will combine your scientific knowledge regarding fish and their habitat and over time you will be encouraged and supported to attend or present at conferences / events and undertake training to develop your skills, giving you the chance to enhance your career and influence how we best meet our client needs in a growing and ever-changing market.

About you

You will have experience of fish ecology and fisheries habitats with a focus on freshwaters, and we are particularly interested in applicants with a background in river restoration schemes for fish habitat improvements. Ideally you will have experience working for a consultancy, however a passionate and commercial outlook is also important to us.

We are looking for someone with a collaborative mindset, who is keen to work with colleagues across a range of fisheries and wider environmental disciplines. You will be driven by the requirements for sustainable development in the aquatic environment and the need for environmental protection and effective management.

In addition, you will need excellent communication and reporting skills, good knowledge of Office (specifically Word & Excel) and have an understanding of GIS software packages.

Next steps

With this flexible working role, we offer a diverse workload in addition to opportunities for growth and for this reason expect significant interest. If you are passionate about the aquatic environment, in particular freshwater fisheries and pride yourself in using scientific rigour to provide solutions to clients then please apply on our website. All we need is some basic information and your CV, we will review all applications quickly and will respond to all applications.
