Position Summary

The Research Scholar (Working Title: Climate Integration and Outreach Scholar) position provides leadership on research projects and directions that advance scientific understanding of climate processes in the Carolinas and improve the assessment of climate-related vulnerabilities and impacts. The Research Scholar is housed within the Southeast Regional Climate Center (SERCC), one of six (6) Regional Climate Centers in the country funded by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These Regional Climate Centers provide climatological research and outreach programs within each region of the United States. This particular research and public service center is housed within UNC-Chapel Hill’s Department of Geography. 

This Research Scholar position was created and is funded by NOAA’s Carolinas Integrated Sciences and Assessments (CISA) group, housed at the University of South Carolina. This position creates an official partnership between CISA and the Southeast Regional Climate Center. Like the SERCC, CISA is a research and outreach center that mainly concentrates on providing research and outreach programs within North and South Carolina. Both Centers specialize in the study of how weather and climate effect vulnerable populations in the Carolinas; however the SERCC has a specific focus on weather and climate related health impacts. This Research Scholar is responsible for leading collaboration between the Centers, with each benefiting from the research pursuits, the technical knowledge, and services that this position provides. Therefore, this position requires a great deal of autonomy and serves as the primary liaison between the Centers.

Educational Requirements

Master’s degree in relevant field is required, PhD preferred.

Qualifications and Experience

Extensive experience in scientific research, especially in the realm of applied climate and social science. Particular skills in data analysis and statistics are preferred, along with experience working with spatial-temporal datasets using geographic information science (GIS) approaches. Excellent verbal and written communications skills and excellent organizational skills are required. Highly desirable are skills in effectively communicating complex concepts across different disciplines, especially in the realms of climate, water resources, and health. Because this position is a shared position between two research centers, one located in South Carolina, it is essential that the selected candidate work effectively and successfully with little to no direct oversight.
