Position Summary: Contribute to the research mission of IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering (IIHR) and the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) by participating in the collection, management, and analysis of field data, as well as the dissemination of information describing the geologic and groundwater resources of Iowa.

Position Responsibilities:

Research:

  • Perform research and service related activities in hydrogeology based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator.
  • Research literature as requested. Adapt and perform protocols from the literature.
  • Critically review literature for the purposes of furthering the research and developing new hypotheses in conjunction with other investigators.
  • Conduct field work and laboratory analyses, including geophysical data collection, shallow well installation, water level measurements, pump tests, water quality sampling and data analyses. Requires up to 25 percent field work, and several overnights per month. Must have a valid driver's license and ability to meet and maintain UI Fleet Safety Standards.
  • Evaluate stratigraphy using drilling samples, lithologic logs and geophysical methods.
  • Develop GIS coverages and shapefiles related to hydrogeology and water resources.
  • Conduct research and service related projects using analytical and numerical models such as MODFLOW, MIKE SHE, and/or Groundwater VISTAS.

Experiments, Investigations, Evaluations:

  • Perform basic and complex procedures and techniques as outlined in research protocol, assure fidelity to protocols, may propose modifications to protocols and/or assist in the design of research protocols. Apply new methods/theories.
  • Arrange and plan daily activities to prepare for investigation protocols. Develop and implement procedures for monitoring data integrity.
  • Design portions of investigation plans. Monitor, test and evaluate current procedures.
  • Identify and adhere to Quality Assurance practices to maintain validity and integrity of hydrogeologic data. Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.
  • Set up and operate hydrogeologic equipment.
  • Collect, record and consolidate data as directed by the Research Specialists and Research Engineers.

Collect, Analyze and Summarize Data; Prepare Reports; Contribute to Manuscripts, Publications:

  • Perform statistical analysis of data and qualitative analysis.
  • Assist in preparing publications and presentations. May contribute to the technical writing of papers, manuscripts, grant applications and published materials as evidenced by documented recognition. Prepare bibliographies and abstracts for publications.
  • Present results/findings at team and departmental meetings; present at local and national meetings.
  • Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used. Prepare materials for reports.

Administrative and Project Management:

  • Make recommendations regarding the validity of research and data.
  • Responsible for safety programs by following guidelines and maintaining required documentation.
  • Track various indicators of project progress and summarize in reports to the research team.

Facilities and Equipment Management:

  • Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities.
  • Monitor environmental risks and quality control.
  • Test new equipment and troubleshoot and resolve complex equipment failures and repairs.

Supervision/Staffing:

  • Provide training on basic lab techniques and protocols.
  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to track progress and assure outcomes are achieved.
  • May participate in monitoring the performance of staff to assure staff is compliant with UI policies and procedures.

Education Required:

  • A bachelor's degree in geology, engineering, water resources, or a closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Experience Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience collecting, analyzing and reporting field data on geological and groundwater resources is required
  • Proficient in computer software applications and/or other geologic related databases is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a research environment is required
  • Excellent written communication skills is required
  • Ability to travel in surrounding geographic area; and hold a valid driver's license, plus the ability to meet the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V, Chapter 19) is required

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in geology, engineering, water resources, or a closely related discipline is highly desirable
  • Familiarity/experience with groundwater and hydrologic modeling such as Visual MODFLOW, MIKE SHE, and/or Groundwater VISTAS, or equivalent is desirable
