Interfacing geoscience and social science within Geo.X. Geo.X is a strategic partnership of university and non-university institutions in the metropolitan region of Berlin and Potsdam spanning the whole range of geoscientific disciplines. Geo.X tackles societal challenges that require the joint efforts of geoscientists and social scientists. These challenges include impacts of global environmental change, such as climate warming, land-use change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem change, air and water pollution, and related natural hazards, such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, and meteor impacts. With this call we seek individuals with geoscience or social science research skills that can interface both research fields.
Focus on societal challenges. Further building the Geo.X Young Academy we invite applications for
h2. 16 Young Academy positions:
(3-year PhD or 2-year Postdoc positions)
This is a joint call with our second topic “Geo.Data Science”. The 16 positions will be filled with the top applicants from both fields. Affinity with Geo.Society as well as Geo.Data Science will be an asset.
Our Vision. We aim to train a new generation of young scientists capable of conversing and collaborating across disciplinary boundaries. Each application has to include a short research proposal at the intersection of geoscience and social science. We envisage contributions to mixed methods research on human-environment relations, coupled geo/social science models, risk assessment, natural resource management, Science and Technology Studies or knowledge exchange and co-creation. We expect candidates to describe their own research ideas within this framework highlighting its interdisciplinary innovation and applicability to at least one Geo.X key research field (Planetary) Geodynamics, Natural Hazards and Risks, Natural Ressources and Energy Raw Materials, Geo-Bio-Interactions, and Human Habitat and Sustainability.
Interdisciplinary Young Academy. With our interdisciplinary Young Academy, we offer a vibrant research environment that covers interinstitutional collaborations, interdisciplinary supervision, specialized training courses (e.g. summer schools, workshops, and peer-organized seminars) and soft skills training. We provide young scientists the opportunity to further develop their research results, making them available to the public and private sectors and to society at large. Our exchange programs will ease rapid integration into the international research community.
Applicants. PhD candidates should have strong social science or geoscience research skills, proven by a MSc or MA degree or equivalent. A clear affinity to interdisciplinary research is mandatory. Social scientists need to prove experience or strong interest in geoscientific practice and geoscientists need to prove experience or strong interest in social science applications. Postdocs must hold a PhD degree on a relevant topic, demonstrate interdisciplinary experiences involving geoscience and social science (e.g. proven by previous projects), and show an independent research idea. We highly encourage female candidates to apply.
