The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The North America Office helps to implement the UN Environment's Regional programs in North America by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental, challenges, opportunities and emergencies. This position is located in the North America Office in Washington DC, USA.
The UN Environment, North America Office internship is for a minimum of 3 months with strong preference for 6 months commitment. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The chosen candidate will work on a range of diverse topics related to marine ecosystems management, stakeholder engagement, and plastic pollution. The intern will be expected to interact closely with staff members and will be given responsibilities based on experience and skills.
The Environmental Policy Intern's responsibilities may include the following:
•Support the implementation of the supervisors’ areas of work in topics including, but not limited to: ecosystems management (with an emphasis on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)); and chemicals, waste and air quality (with emphasis on agricultural plastic pollution).
•Assist the Regional Ecosystems Management Officer in the timely delivery of materials and research in support of the North American Marine Protected Areas Network.
•Maintain and update the North American Marine Protected Areas Network’s website and social mediate accounts, including Facebook and Twitter.
•Contribute to the development of a white paper studying the use of plastics in agriculture in the region.
•Assist with efforts to develop cooperation and partnerships with the private sector and other stakeholders from the North American region.
•Conduct scientific and policy research on various topics and compile, summarize, and present relevant information.
•Draft short reports, memos, briefs, correspondence, and other written materials in support of areas of work.
•Assist in the planning and coordination of events, conferences, meetings, calls, and presentations.
• Contribute to outreach events on relevant topics.
•Participate in group discussions and contribute insights, ideas, and feedback on topics and issues.
•Perform and participate in intern-specific duties and activities, such as drafting and distributing the internal newsletter Environment in the News in collaboration with other interns, and attending the UN Internship Seminar Series.
•Provide additional support as needed.

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Studies in marine affairs, oceans and natural resources management, marine pollution, and plastic pollution; environmental policies or related fields; Knowledge of the agricultural sector and plastic use throughout the food production life cycle is a plus.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of Spanish is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
