Job Description

Job Overview:

The purpose of the WASH Coordinator position is technical development, strategic direction and quality assurance of NRC Afghanistan’s WASH activities and programme, as well as relevant staff mentoring and capacity development. WASH Coordinator is expected to follow NRC’s routines and guidelines for project governance applicable for the particular project.  The WASH Coordinator is responsible for the overall planning and coordination of the WASH projects across the country.

Generic Responsibilities:

  1. Assess WASH specialist to Develop country level WASH strategy, technical guidance and Macro-Log-Frames.
  2. Compliance with and adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures.
  3. Contribute with WASH specialis/Adviser on fundraising, develop and revise funding proposal, budgets and donor reports.
  4. Identify trends, technical standards and donor priorities.
  5. Coordinate and manage WASH project implementation (activities, design, budget and project documentation) in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements.
  6. Provide technical direction and project implementation support to all areas.
  7. Ensure that key learnings are extracted from CC implementation, and incorporate them in WASH programme and staff development processes.
  8. Provide systematic training and build capacity of technical staff regarding water GEM and water CAD software.
  9. Collect and Provide regular progress reports to WASH Specialist and WASH adviser.
  10. Represent NRC in relevant forums/clusters, including with national authorities and donors.
  11. Promote the rights of IDPs/returnees in line with the advocacy strategy.

Specific responsibilities:

  1. Programme advocacy that aims to improve displaced people’s access to safe water.
  2. Technical supervision of WASH activities supporting WASH integration with other CCs (shelter, education, CM..).
  3. In close collaboration with the WASH specialist and WASH adviser, expand, develop, coordinate and manage NRC’s WASH projects in country level.
  4. Contribute to Prepare/develop narrative and budgets for proposals in conjunction with Finance and Administration Manager (FAM), Logistic Manager and WASH specialist.
  5. Contribute to Prepare/develop narrative and budgets for proposals of projects in conjunction with Area Manager and the WASH Specialist.
  6. Technical support for household-level sanitation and water supply.
  7. Improve quality of hygiene promotion activities, behaviour change and capacities in targeted area.
  8. Collect and Provide regular progress reports to WASH Specialist and WASH adviser, updating the WASH cluster report HUB and other relevant reports.
  9. Ensure that WASH related constructions are in accordance with norms, desing and standards.
  10. Ensure a constructive co-operation with NRC’s other programs.
  11. Support coordination of WASH supply chain.
  12. Participate in relevant meetings.
  13. Innovation in integrated WASH activities.
  14. Any other task relevant to the position as requested by the WASH specialist and WASH adviser.

  1. Minimum 3 years of experience within technical expertise area of humanitarian WASH
  2. Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  3. Knowledge about own leadership skills/profile
  4. Fluency in English, both written and verbal
  5. Holding valid university degree on Civil Engineering  / construction
  6. Goal oriented and visionary.
  7. Ability to work under pressure, independently and with limited supervision.
  8. Ability and willingness to work and live under difficult circumstances.
  9. Flexible, creative and sense of humour.
  10. Knowledge of national languages both Dari and Pashto, ability to travel
