Akima Systems Engineering (ASE)

Iowa City, IA, USA ūüáļūüáł

Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) supports the Intelligence, DoD, and Science and Research communities with tools, domain knowledge, analyst teams and essential mission staffing services. We continually seek people with the skills, experience and passion to successfully leverage the complete intelligence lifecycle across America‚Äôs most critical initiatives. As an Alaska Native Corporation (ANC), 100% of our company‚Äôs profits go back to our more than 14,000 I√Īupiat shareholders that have resided near and above the Arctic Circle for more than 10,000 years. Our business helps support their way of life and contributes to the survival of a culture that has thrived in a challenging environment.

The USGS Central Midwest Water Science Center (CMWSC) offers information on streamflow, water quality, water-use, and groundwater data for Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. CMWSC conducts unbiased, scientific hydrologic investigations and research projects to effectively manage CMWSC and our Nation’s water resources through joint efforts with our partners. Specific water resources activities of the CMWSC include maintenance and analysis of long-term (prior to the turn of the Century) quantitative and qualitative data for streams, reservoirs, estuaries, and groundwater; and short-term interpretive investigations of specific water-resources issues on a local, State, regional, and national level. Such investigations include the study of groundwater availability, urbanization and flooding, water quality of Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri’s major river basins, sedimentation of rivers and lakes, and contamination of surface water and groundwater by hazardous waste. CMWSC research is used by other Federal agencies, State and local entities, private organizations, and the public to make informed decisions about the use and protection of Nation’s water resources.

Akima is looking for a Scientist V to participate with Government staff and scientists in developing project proposal, conducting groundwater modeling and writing and publishing USGS report products. The Scientist V will perform the following tasks:

  • Collect, compile, and analyze new or updated geologic data
    • ‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äčaquifer hydraulic data for the geologic units
    • ‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äčlocation and amount of groundwater withdrawn from within the study area water-level information for calibration of the ground-water model not already captured in the existing model (Tucci and McKay, 2006)
  • Evaluate all data to design the appropriate model configuration
    • ‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äčupdate hydrostratigraphic framework with updated information
    • address original model limitation where pumping resulted in simulated water levels below top of the aquifer, potentially resolve by creating model with 2 separate aquifers, however productions wells are open to both formations
  • ‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚ÄčConstruct and calibrate a transient ground-water flow model for the Silurian-Devonian aquifer system in the study area
    • ‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚ÄčTest scenarios of pumping and recharge variability
  • ‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč Analyze model output and information collected for model preparation to interpret the effects of pumping on the hydrologic system
  • Document the data used, model specifications, and interpretations made in a technical report to the cooperator(s)
  • Publication of final report and model archive
  • Presentation to cooperator of major findings
  • Teach and mentor USGS scientists on methods used

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Hydrology, Geology, or related field is required
  • Expertise in both regional and local scale groundwater flow modeling
  • Extensive experience in drought impact assessments and resiliency, groundwater sustainability and quantification, well interference analysis, groundwater and surface water interaction, aquifer pump test design and analyses, source water and wellhead protection, groundwater exploration and planning, and groundwater quality evaluations
  • Expertise in geology, hydrology, and water use in Iowa
  • Individual shall have the ability to work with little or no supervision in the office and remotely within established guidelines and operational procedures
  • You must be able to meet all health requirements, including but not limited to, current and future vaccination requirements for infectious diseases such as COVID-19
