What can you expect as junior advisor / researcher operational water management
We are looking for a junior to join our team in the field of operational water management (coastal/rivers). We are developing state-of-the-art knowledge in the field of flood early warning, decision support, and integration of data and models into real-time information systems. For this we make extensive use of the Delft-FEWS software package, which collects hydrological, meteorological and earth observation data, runs hydrological simulation models and provides forecasts regarding the condition of the water system.

As a junior advisor/researcher you will work on a daily basis on setting up and improving hydrological and/or hydraulic simulation models and integrating these models into forecasting systems.  Your tasks include:

  • You will assist in advising government agencies such as Rijkswaterstaat or a water board on how to manage, configure and further develop a specific forecasting system for a river or coastal area;
  • You will develop and improve hydrological and / or hydraulic aimulation models, and integrate these models in the forecasting systems;
  • You will contribute to applied research in the field of real-time information;
  • You will visit clients to discuss issues with them on regular basis. You are also in contact with international clients;
  • Depending on your knowledge and experience you play a role in creating assignments for our clients in the Netherlands or abroad;
  • You think and write along in proposals and advice and you like to help developing new knowledge;
  • You will visit clients to discuss the project work.

What does Deltares expect from you as junior advisor/researcher?

  • You have a relevant education (e.g. civil engineering or earth sciences) at academic level (MSc) with a focus on hydrology, hydrodynamics or coastal management, or you will be graduating soon;
  • You have good communication skills, both in Dutch and in English. Communication skills in Spanish or French is a plus;
  • You have knowledge of and affinity with scripting, for example in Python which you will use to improve the simulation models. In addition, you are interested in new IT developments and enjoy developing yourself further in this;
  • Experience with data management and/or issues in the field of operational water management is a plus;
  • It is a plus if you have experience with the development of hydrological simulation models such as WFlow, Delft3D, Sobek, SFINCS, HEC-HMS or HEC-RAS;
  • You are collaborative and results oriented, customer focused and entrepreneurial;
  • Depending on your knowledge and experience you play a role in creating assignments at governments and market parties in the Netherlands or abroad.
