Job Summary: The Research Manager assists in the daily administration of a specific program or department within the Office of Research and Economic Development. The Research Manager may also serve as a scientific and/or research ambassador and will be responsible for developing new consulting and research opportunities.
Additional Department Summary: The Alabama Water Institute (AWI) is one of The University of Alabama’s four research institutes. AWI focuses on basic and applied research efforts to sustain waterways, marshes, estuaries and coastal areas. It provides a forum for interdisciplinary research and education and brings together university researchers, students and staff to foster collaboration and a broad interdisciplinary focus on water issues that face our world today. AWI-affiliated researchers specialize in water security and quality, remote sensing, hydrological modeling, biodiversity, watershed management and human health through synergies with existing centers and the creation of new centers under the umbrella of AWI.
The Director for Education and Outreach will tightly integrate education, outreach, and
engagement (EOE) activities with research activities in four key areas: (1) research community engagement, (2) higher education programs for students, (3) workforce training, and (4) public outreach. In these four areas, AWI seeks an individual experienced in creating innovative programs having a high impact relevant for engaging those engaged with federal water-related agencies (e.g., NOAA, USGS, EPA).
The Director will be responsible for incorporating the newest methods and tools in education and outreach practice to achieve substantial engagement of the research community, students, and the public. The Director will enhance efforts of AWI in the delivery of programs that achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion objectives. The Director will identify and substantially contribute to the development, writing and submitting of grant applications for outreach and education. The Director will lead the creation and delivery of programs that increase public-awareness through education-oriented institute events, designs creative marketing and social media campaigns and expands institute outreach opportunities through externally funded activities.
Continuation in this position is contingent upon availability of external funding derived from research programs or specific projects. Available to work outside of normal business hours and travel.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of experience; OR Master’s degree and three (3) years of experience.
Skills and Knowledge: Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Position duties require expertise in education principles, higher education systems, graduate research, and professional development. Also required are computer skills, not limited to spreadsheet applications, personal computing networks, digital outreach tools, and internet software. Must have the ability to work effectively under stress, and high levels of activity. The incumbent must be detail oriented and manage details to meet deadlines. Advanced critical thinking skills. Strong leadership, creativity, facilitation, and collaboration skills. Anticipates and plans proactively for known deadlines and annual cycles. Available to work outside of normal business hours and travel.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in education, public policy & administration, science preferred. Experience in higher education setting preferred.
