Job Description:

The Department of International Development, Community, and Environment (IDCE) at Clark University seeks to fill a 1-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Climate Change and Environmental Governance, to begin August 2022. The successful candidate will have strong competency in the integration of environmental science and policy and evidence of teaching proficiency at undergraduate and/or graduate levels. A doctorate in environmental science, environmental policy or related discipline is required at time of appointment.

The incumbent will teach five courses in the broad area of climate change adaptation and environmental governance, including: “Climate Change, Energy & Development”, “Environmental Governance”, and three courses based on their expertise and departmental need. All five courses will be at the advanced undergraduate and/or graduate level and serve IDCE students enrolled in our Master’s degree programs (ES&P, CDP, GIS & ID) as well as students in other departments and programs (e.g. Geography, Global Environmental Studies, Sociology). The faculty member will assist with student advising in the Environmental Science & Policy (ES&P) MS Program and the ES&P Track of the Environmental Science BA Major.

Requirements:

Applicants must submit a cover letter addressing their qualifications for the position, including previous teaching experience, ideas for courses they would teach while in IDCE, and a few paragraphs on promoting diversity and inclusion inside and outside the classroom.

  • Below are a few ideas that might be developed in diversity & inclusion paragraphs.  These are by no means exhaustive.  You might describe how you have gone about fostering inclusion and building pathways by:
  • Creating an inclusive and accessible classroom/course (including developing your skills for doing this)
  • Working with campus organizations that support underrepresented, first-generation, differently-abled or non-traditional undergraduate or graduate students
  • Developing discipline or area-specific pathways to majors for such students (e.g., women in science)
  • Mentoring individual students, faculty or staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Training international students or mentoring faculty from developing countries
  • Broadening the influence of your work for the public and enhancing underserved communities by participating in K-12 classroom, museums, or other afterschool programming aimed at fostering general education, excitement, and possibility (particularly in underserved populations)
  • Developing educational programming through the media or social media
  • Bringing results of research back to local or international communities
  • Participating as a ‘public intellectual’ on timely issues
  • Engaging in community activities around education, social justice, equity, and inclusion.
