Fisheries Technician 3 (Certified) In – Lake
The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) is the Tribal Council for the Syilx Okanagan Nation. The ONA’s mandate is to advance, assert, support and preserve the Syilx Okanagan Nation title and rights. Further, the ONA is charged with providing members with a forum to discuss and form positions of common concern.
The ONA is currently seeking to employ a Certified Fisheries Technician 3 (In-lake) within their fisheries department. The
successful applicant should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic results based environment and have excellent
problem solving, communication, supervision, time management, and safety management skills. This position will primarily be responsible for lake research Acoustic Trawl Surveys (ATS), mysis/zooplankton surveys and limnological sampling.

Key duties and responsibilities include:
 The collection, preservation, and analysis of biological, chemical or physical samples, data and information through the
application of standard protocols.
 Participating in the preparation and conduct of field projects in Fisheries, specifically: ATS, trawling,
mysis/zooplankton surveys, and limnological sampling.
 Performing standard methods and protocols respecting the field/laboratory analysis of samples and specimens such as
measurement or determination of biological, chemical or physical parameters, and the operation of manual or
automated analytical instrumentation.
 Meticulous collection, management, and quality assurance/ quality control of various field data.
 Working closely with an assigned biologist or technician to collect data on stock enumerations, biological sampling,
fish species identification, fish collection using a variety of techniques, and water quality sampling.
 Processing acoustic data files using Sonar 5 Pro software.
 Operating and maintaining field/laboratory equipment and instrumentation during projects and assisting in their
modification, adaptation, testing and calibration to meet specific mission requirements.
 Ensuring equipment storage maintenance and reporting issues as required.
 Supervision of field crew including uncertified technicians.
 Other duties as required of this position.
Qualifications and Competencies
The Fisheries Technician will require the following qualifications, values and competencies.

 Fish and Wildlife Technician Diploma or equivalent.
 Minimum of two years of boating experience.
 First Aid Level 1, Transportation Endorsement, Swift Water Rescue certification, Pleasure Craft Operators
Card/Marine Emergency Duties (MED A3) are assets
 Must be comfortable and feel safe working in and around rivers, streams and lakes

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
 Knowledge of enumeration techniques and fish identification is desirable.
 Experience in fish capture techniques is desirable.
 Knowledge of general mechanics/small engine repair an asset.
 Must be comfortable and feel safe working in and around rivers, streams and lakes; working in all weather conditions.
 Willingness to work nights and weekends is required.
 Willingness to travel to remote work sites for extended periods.
 Punctuality and reliability are required.
 Worksite safety regulations must be adhered to at all times, and technicians must demonstrate a good work ethic.
 BC Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) is required.
 Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
 Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Okanagan Aboriginal ancestry

Term: Full time 40 hours per week, with flexible work hours (e.g. some evenings and weekends). A market related
salary, pension and benefits package is attached to the position.
