Job description

We are looking for a technical leader to co-ordinate delivery of the Environment Agency’s water resources actions on chalk streams. This is a new role, so there is the opportunity to shape it from the outset.

You will:
• lead development and implementation of the water resources chalk delivery programme nationally
• provide technical leadership to the area chalk programme via Area chalk leads
• lead on developing a network of Area chalk leads to share best practice on development, engagement, and delivery of local chalk plans
• bring together area and nationally led work on improving the chalk evidence base
• oversee long-term strategy for GW and hydro-ecological modelling to support the environmental destination
• provide the link between Environment & Business (E&B) developing chalk policy and future strategy and operational implementation via the E&B WR chalk technical group
• work with Operations Catchment Services (OCS) sustainable abstraction leads on developing the chalk elements of the sustainable abstraction programme and input to the price review process
• work with OCS Environmental destination lead, regional environmental planning leads and water company leads to ensure abstraction solutions for chalk catchments are delivered via water resources planning

The team

The Sustainable Abstraction team delivers Defra’s Abstraction Plan and the water resources element of the Price Review. The team also lead communities of practice with local operations on sustainable abstraction. The team is being expanded to include a greater focus on the environmental destination within regional water resource plans and to coordinate the Environment Agency’s delivery of the chalk stream action plan. The team sits within the wider OCS Water Resources department in National Operations.

Experience/skills required

• detailed technical knowledge and experience of abstraction management, water resources planning and chalk issues
• experience of leading a national programme and coordinating area leads to deliver key environmental outcomes
• experience of working with E&B to influence policy development
• experience of technical engagement with stakeholders on challenging water resources issues
