Alberta Environment and Parks manages, operates and maintains a large portfolio of water management infrastructure, valued at over $10 Billion, located throughout Alberta that includes major dams, headworks canals, river diversions, flood protection dykes, pump houses and water pipelines.  This infrastructure is critical to provide water security, flood and drought protection to Albertans as well as recreational opportunities and support for riparian environments.

Reporting to the Manager, Water Projects Management, this position works with a team of professionals that provides geotechnical / hydrotechnical, and other engineering support required manage, operate and rehabilitate Alberta’s water infrastructure. 

This Water Projects Management Engineering duties, include, providing, engineering support, inspections, design review, project management, trouble shooting, operational analyses and advice as required, for the planning, design, rehabilitation and operation of provincial infrastructure.  

In this role, you will work primarily in an office setting in Edmonton; however, some travel will be required to conduct site visits, inspections and to attend meetings throughout the province. You will have regular and on-going contact with Environment and Parks regional operations staff, departmental specialists, representatives from other ministries and agencies, and government officials.



  • University degree in a related Engineering field with advanced courses in geotechnical / hydrotechnical engineering preferred.
  • Five (5) years of Engineering experience related to water management infrastructure (dams, canals, hydraulic structures).  
  • Engineering experience shall include any of the following specific areas
    • Design and construction of dam, canal and related hydraulic structures.
    • Operation and Maintenance of dam, canal and related hydraulic structures.
    • Conducting water infrastructure engineering inspections and leading follow-up corrective actions.
    • Formal Dam Safety Reviews and annual performance reporting for water dam projects.
  • Must be eligible for Licensing with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).  
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.


  • Equivalent Structural or Electrical/Mechanical engineering experience related to Dams and other related Water Management infrastructure may be considered.
  • Additional closely-related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis
  • Equivalent closely-related experience with other civil infrastructure engineering projects may be considered.


  • The position requires strong interpersonal skills working with in-house engineering technologists, Engineers, Operations staff, and multi-disciplinary consultant teams.  Strong project management, organizational and problem solving skills are also required.  
  • Knowledge and experience with Project Management and Contract Administration best practices.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Requirements and the Alberta Water Act and Dam Safety Regulations.
  • Standard First Aid, fall protection and confined space entry certifications.

$3,007.16  to $4,163.64  bi-weekly: ($78,486 to $108,671 per year)


Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

About Your Work Environment: You will be working primarily in an office setting located in Edmonton.  However some to travel to field sites located throughout Alberta will require occasional overtime and overnight stays. Performing duties on a rotating 24/7 basis during flood or other emergency events may be required.
