WASH Policy and Advocacy Advisor



Wa­t­erAid Swe­den is part of the Wa­t­erAid Fed­er­a­tion and to­gether with our over 1000 col­leagues we op­er­ate in 34 coun­tries. We are a global or­gan­i­sa­tion with a broad mix of com­pe­ten­cies from more than 30 coun­tries.

The Pol­icy and Ad­vo­cacy team is re­spon­si­ble for Wa­t­erAid Swe­den’s ob­jec­tives to in­flu­ence Swedish and EU de­ci­sion-mak­ers. Team mem­bers are re­spon­si­ble for both pol­icy de­vel­op­ment and ad­vo­cacy. Cur­rently, the team works with ad­vo­cacy that links WASH to Gen­der equal­ity, Health, and Cli­mate adap­ta­tion/​re­silience. You will be join­ing a team that is tak­ing a leap in terms of our ad­vo­cacy ca­pac­ity and have a clear vi­sion of what we can achieve within a few years. Your role

The SDG 6 tar­gets clean wa­ter, de­cent san­i­ta­tion and good hy­giene are among the fur­thest be­hind. Achiev­ing uni­ver­sal, sus­tain­able WASH will re­quire a ma­jor mo­bil­i­sa­tion of re­sources, pub­lic de­mand and po­lit­i­cal will. The suc­cess­ful can­di­date will play a ma­jor role in de­vel­op­ing and de­liv­er­ing on Wa­t­erAid Swe­den’s ad­vo­cacy strate­gies tar­get­ing Swedish po­lit­i­cal de­ci­sion-mak­ers. The role also in­cludes sup­port­ing other func­tions at Wa­t­erAid Swe­den with WASH ex­per­tise.

Policy development

Lead the development of informed WaterAid positions on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).

Act as the reference point and work with quality assurance within WaterAid Sweden.
Producing high-quality policy briefs and educational material specifically tailored to different audiences.

Keeping up to date with research, policy development and practice relevant to WaterAid Sweden’s objectives.

Proactively contribute to the federation’s policy development and capacity to influence decision making in relevant policy spaces.
Advocacy Strategy and implementation

Lead the development of WASH advocacy strategy, including relevant long term and short-term advocacy objectives, to influence relevant target groups on WASH in Sweden and EU.

Conduct a variety of power and political analyses of the Swedish policy environment relevant to WAS advocacy objectives.
Develop and maintain fruitful relationships with decision-makers within relevant Swedish and EU target groups.
Develop and strengthen existing partnerships with civil society allies and networks and other interested actors.
Represent WaterAid Sweden in relevant external discussions and convey policy positions in line with WaterAid’s objectives;
Plan, organise and coordinate strategic advocacy engagement at priority campaign moments and events.

Essential skills

Extensive policy and advocacy experience on WASH, demonstrated by examples of strategic impact on policy change and experience of using policy, research, lobbying, public campaigning, media and digital work to influence a political agenda.

A keen political ‘savviness’ and experience of achieving change in a Swedish political context.

A strategic, innovative and creative thinker with the ability to deliver tangible results.
Experience in working with quality assurance processes and supporting colleagues who work with different objectives and strategies.
Creative and accurate written and verbal communications skills in English and good enough understanding in Swedish to follow conversations and read written professional Swedish.

Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and proven experience in contributing to strategy development, including monitoring and evaluation.

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to successfully manage complex and sensitive organisational relationships to achieve cross-organisational collectively agreed goals.
Commitment to WaterAid’s values and a working style that reflects these.


Understanding of Swedish development cooperation, its policy space as well as program implementation and aid tracking.
Knowledge of development/aid effectiveness.

Experience from EU policy change.
Experience in linking WASH to climate adaptation and resilience.

This is a full-time and per­ma­nent role, with a 6-month pro­ba­tion­ary pe­riod. Wa­t­erAid Swe­den has a col­lec­tive agree­ment. Your work­place is in hy­brid for­mat and at Wa­t­erAid’s of­fice in Solna.
