The Policy and Advocacy team is responsible for WaterAid Sweden’s objectives to influence Swedish and EU decision-makers. Team members are responsible for both policy development and advocacy. Currently, the team works with advocacy that links WASH to Gender equality, Health, and Climate adaptation/resilience. The SDG 6 targets clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene are among the furthest behind. Achieving universal, sustainable WASH will require a major mobilisation of resources, public demand and political will. The successful candidate will play a major role in developing and delivering on WaterAid Sweden’s advocacy strategies targeting Swedish political decision-makers. The role also includes supporting other functions at WaterAid Sweden with WASH expertise.
Lead the development of informed WaterAid positions on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
Act as the reference point and work with quality assurance within WaterAid Sweden.
Producing high-quality policy briefs and educational material specifically tailored to different audiences.
Keeping up to date with research, policy development and practice relevant to WaterAid Sweden’s objectives.
Proactively contribute to the federation’s policy development and capacity to influence decision making in relevant policy spaces.
Advocacy Strategy and implementation
Lead the development of WASH advocacy strategy, including relevant long term and short-term advocacy objectives, to influence relevant target groups on WASH in Sweden and EU.
Conduct a variety of power and political analyses of the Swedish policy environment relevant to WAS advocacy objectives.
Develop and maintain fruitful relationships with decision-makers within relevant Swedish and EU target groups.
Develop and strengthen existing partnerships with civil society allies and networks and other interested actors.
Represent WaterAid Sweden in relevant external discussions and convey policy positions in line with WaterAid’s objectives;
Plan, organise and coordinate strategic advocacy engagement at priority campaign moments and events.
Extensive policy and advocacy experience on WASH, demonstrated by examples of strategic impact on policy change and experience of using policy, research, lobbying, public campaigning, media and digital work to influence a political agenda.
A keen political ‘savviness’ and experience of achieving change in a Swedish political context.
A strategic, innovative and creative thinker with the ability to deliver tangible results.
Experience in working with quality assurance processes and supporting colleagues who work with different objectives and strategies.
Creative and accurate written and verbal communications skills in English and good enough understanding in Swedish to follow conversations and read written professional Swedish.
Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and proven experience in contributing to strategy development, including monitoring and evaluation.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to successfully manage complex and sensitive organisational relationships to achieve cross-organisational collectively agreed goals.
Commitment to WaterAid’s values and a working style that reflects these.
Understanding of Swedish development cooperation, its policy space as well as program implementation and aid tracking.
Knowledge of development/aid effectiveness.
Experience from EU policy change.
Experience in linking WASH to climate adaptation and resilience.
This is a full-time and permanent role, with a 6-month probationary period. WaterAid Sweden has a collective agreement. Your workplace is in hybrid format and at WaterAid’s office in Solna.
