Job summary

An exciting new vacancy for a Research Associate / Sanitation Advisor to Oxfam and Water For People based at Imperial College London is now open for applications. This post will be funded via the Oxfam and Water For People / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Global Sanitation Technology. It will contribute critical leadership towards the design, development, and testing of novel onsite sanitation technologies and faecal sludge management processes for developing country applications.

This is a fixed term appointment for 2.5 years.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for overseeing the design, testing and implementation of enhanced low-cost septic tank designs, improving existing de-sludging technologies, and developing new faecal sludge characterisation methods. You will also co-supervise research by PhD, Master’s and undergraduate students, examining topics such as modular faecal sludge management processes and vermifiltration treatment technologies.  You will work closely with Oxfam and Water For People sanitation teams based in the UK and overseas, to achieve the research objectives.

You will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals based on this work, and to attract external research funding.

You will also coordinate field activities with partners overseas, manage the research website and other forms of communication of research news, and manage the day-to-day running of the project.

You will be mainly based in London at Imperial College London, with occasional travel to Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia, India and/or Bangladesh.

Essential requirements

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Environmental Engineering (or a closely related discipline), preferably with a focus on water or sanitation in developing countries for appointment at Research Associate level.

You will have previous experience in designing and implementing field-based research in development settings. Experience of interacting with stakeholders, policymakers, and end users of water or sanitation technologies in developing countries will be an advantage.
