PhD Environmental limits to global groundwater

Wageningen University & Research

Wageningen, Netherlands 🇳🇱

We are looking for

Are you interested in global water and sustainability challenges? Do you want to work with large scale numerical models? Then this could be the ideal PhD for you!

We are looking for a PhD candidate who is interested in global water and sustainability challenges. This project specifically aims to identify and quantify the impact of groundwater use on the environment (like on rivers, lakes, and groundwater fed wetlands), as well as to quantify how much groundwater can be used sustainably now and in the future. You should have an interest in large-scale hydrology, groundwater modelling, and in working with large datasets and numerical models. This PhD position is part of the ERC Starting Grant project GROW (Groundwater sustainability and crop production). Together with two postdocs and another PhD candidate, you will work as a team on assessing the environmentally safe operating space for groundwater use and the trade-offs between sustainable groundwater use and crop production at the global scale under climate and socio-economic change.

You will contribute to the development of a high resolution global scale surface water, groundwater, and crop growth model. This new model will be derived from models that we currently used in our group (namely VIC, MODFLOW, and WOFOST). Especially the coupling between groundwater and crop production has not been done before. Your focus will be to quantify the volumes of groundwater that can be abstracted worldwide without harming the environment under climate and socio-economic change (e.g. without reaching environmentally critical flow). As such, you will be the first to provide an estimate of the environmental safe operation space for groundwater use now and in the future and a detailed assessment of the impacts of groundwater pumping on the environment worldwide. You will work closely together with at least one of the postdocs who will be responsible for the model development.

You will be part of the Water Systems and Global Change group of Wageningen University. Within the group we study how future climate change affects the global water cycle and how this impacts water for food, energy, and environment. As a PhD in our group you will join the PhD program of the WIMEK graduate school.

We ask

  • A completed (or about to be completed) MSc degree in hydrology, environmental sciences, earth sciences, or a related field;
  • Interested in working on global water and sustainability problems;
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with large datasets and large-scale numerical modelling in context of global change;
  • Affinity in working with numerical modelling preferably on High PerformanceComputing Platforms;
  • Experience in scripting and programming (e.g. Python, R, C++);
  • Willingness to work in multidisciplinary teams;
  • For this position your command of the English language is expected to be at C1 level
  • You meet all the entry requirements of the  WUR PhD programme.
