Opportunity Description:

This internship opportunity is part of a NASA-funded project entitled "Center for Applied Atmospheric Research and Education (CAARE)" that is led by San Jose State University (SJSU) and funded by the NASA Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP) Institutional Research Opportunity (MIRO) Program. The motivation for the establishment of CAARE is to promote STEM literacy and to enhance and sustain the capability to support NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD). As part of this project, three student interns will spend ten weeks in summer 2019 at the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) in Huntsville, Alabama working with NASA-affiliated researchers, Drs. Al-Hamdan and Barik (research scientists at the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) at NASA/MSFC) on hands-on research projects that focus on using remote sensing and GIS for studying the impacts of climate and land cover land use changes on water quality, air quality, ecosystems and environmental public health. The environmental data will be based on remotely sensed, in-situ and/or model data (e.g., Landsat-derived Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Land Cover/Land Use; MODIS and OMI air quality data; MODIS LST data; NLDAS meteorological data; SJSU/Clement's in-situ air quality and meteorological sensors), and health data will be based on CDC and/or state/local health reports and databases. Also, the student interns will receive fundamental remote sensing, GIS, geospatial analysis and programming training. Students will be located in the NSSTC (co-location for NASA/MSFC Earth Science Office, USRA Science and Technology Institute, and UAH Earth System and Atmospheric Science Program) and will join with other NASA scientists and interns in additional activities throughout the summer term, including presentation of research results at a poster contest organized by the NASA/MSFC Academic Affairs Office. The students will also have a chance to present their research results at scientific conferences such as the American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting and the American Meteorological Society Annual Meeting and to contribute to peer-reviewed journal articles.
