Function description

The ESA group offers a three-year postdoc position. The position is part of the European project titled SIMTWIST (Simulating tourism water consumption with stakeholders). This European JPI Water project, carried out with a Spanish and Italian partner, aims to 1) estimate tourism’s share in current and future macro-level water scarcity in the Mediterranean, and 2) study and simulate water-related behaviour of tourism stakeholders at the micro-level. The project’s ultimate objective is to inform tourism decision-makers about the effectiveness of a variety of measures to reduce tourism’s water consumption. As a modeller, the postdoc mainly works on the second aim, engaging with stakeholders to study and model their behaviour with respect to water consumption. The candidate’s main focus will be on research, but to a limited extent, (s)he will also engage in teaching in the curricula of the Environmental Systems Analysis group at MSc and/or BSc level.

Function Requirements

The successful ambitious and enthusiastic candidate:

  1. is a skilled modeller, preferably with experience in agent-based modelling and/or companion modelling;
  2. holds a PhD in Environmental Systems Analysis or a related field; prior experience with water use or tourism-related issues is a bonus;
  3. has demonstrated expertise in inter- or transdiscplinary collaborative research projects in the domain of environmental change and society;
  4. shows a good early career publication record and international research profile;
  5. has excellent skills in stakeholder interaction and scientific writing;
  6. has strong communicative and interpersonal skills and a flexible and collaborative attitude; and
  7. has excellent command of English and is willing to learn Dutch. A (basic) command of Spanish and/or Italian is a bonus.

Job conditions

A three-year position for a postdoc for 38 hours per week (1.0 fte), starting 1 June 2019. Salary depends on knowledge and experience.
