12-month, fixed-term contract (maternity cover) – salary between £25,000 and £30,000 pa (dependent on experience) plus benefits including 6% pension.
This could be a full time (37.5 hrs per week) or a part time (hours negotiable) role.

Job Description

As part of the Trust’s ongoing work we are looking to recruit a competent, dynamic and enthusiastic person with experience in project management and contractor supervision. The role will manage the delivery of a number of projects; the most significant of which is SPONGE2020, an EU Interreg 2Seas funded project focused on adaptation to climate change. The core theme in these projects is the co-design and co-delivery of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS), working with communities in urban environments in Somerset.

The successful candidate will have experience of topics such as urban green/blue infrastructure, SuDS, landscape-scale conservation, ecosystem services, catchment management, and river restoration, and how physical improvement projects deliver these topics in both urban and rural settings.

The Project Manager will have responsibility for overseeing three existing projects that are already underway, as well as developing new opportunities to expand our work in this field further. Duties will specifically include:

  • Work closely with the project team to ensure successful delivery of project outputs and outcomes
  • Manage project budgets, activities and reporting, including attendance at bi-yearly project partner meetings (involving travel to the EU)
  • Manage the development of outline designs and concepts of SuDS through to detailed design and specification
  • Lead on obtaining all necessary consents and permissions (including Environment Agency Permits, Agreements with Landowners and Planning)
  • Lead/oversee the procurement process
  • Manage contractors delivering works to ensure successful delivery of outcomes, ensuring they are in line with consents, health and safety and contract specifications
  • Undertake occasional site visits to monitor and manage quality and progress of works, keeping records and reporting onwards
  • Ensure project costs are in line with overall project budgets
  • Oversee all necessary reports and keep suitable records in line with the funding requirements and document retention policy
  • Highlight any new risks identified during works, and ensure issue management standards are suitable and maintained
  • Ensure projects are delivered through engagement and consultation with communities, including existing community groups, schools, clubs, voluntary sector, interest groups and local councils to foster learning and a sense of ownership in the works.
  • Identify and apply for funding for further SuDS schemes in Somerset & across the South West
  • Build and maintain partnerships with stakeholders, including project partners, landowners, Local Authorities, Environment Agency, Wessex Water, other environmental and community NGOs and others
  • Oversee the production of publicity and marketing materials
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by WRT.

The post holder will be based principally within WRT offices in Stoke Climsland, Cornwall.  The post will report to Dr Nick Paling, Head of Evidence & Engagement.

Person Description

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate that they are exceptionally self-motivated and are passionate about managing and improving the environment. They must also be a good communicator with a strong background in the environmental sector and the delivery of projects.

Essential –

  • Valid driving licence and own car, insured for business use (occasional travel to sites in Somerset will be essential)
  • Degree level or equivalent related experience in the environment sector
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of catchment processes and how they interact
  • Demonstrable experience of successful project delivery, including producing reports
  • Demonstrable experience in contractor management
  • Demonstrable experience of successful project management
  • Knowledge of and experience in ensuring compliance with various consents
  • Ability to work on the differing tasks identified in the Job Description at the same time
  • Ability to manage a number of projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the project team at WRT and with wider partners
  • Excellent presentation skills and communication skills for a wide range of audiences
  • Possessing good interpersonal skills, both face-to-face and over the phone
  • Reliability, good attendance and work performance
  • Ability to set performance objectives and ensure these are achieved
  • Excellent written & verbal communication & presentation skills with good attention to detail
  • Knowledge & competence in Microsoft Office applications

  • Qualification in Project Management
  • Experience of working on European Union Grant funded projects
