Deputy Director General for Science
The Deputy Director General for Science provides interdisciplinary scientific leadership to the institute and ensures that IIASA research stays at the forefront of scientific endeavor. This requires IIASA to make real-world policy impact, to drive sustainable development and to contribute to human wellbeing. The incumbent is responsible for the overall coordination of IIASA research activities and leads a team of competitive research program directors and scientific support units to deliver on the strategic and research goals of the institute. The position holder deputizes for the IIASA Director General/CEO and takes partial responsibility for steering IIASA as part of the executive team.
The Deputy Director General for Science is required to:
- Provide strategic direction to the IIASA interdisciplinary research portfolio
- Coordinate IIASA research programs, including:
- Coordinating the development of the IIASA Research Plan 2021-2025 in close cooperation with both internal and external stakeholders
- Leading the team of research program directors to deliver on the IIASA Strategy and Research Plan
- Monitoring the execution of the Research Plan through appropriate key performance measures, reflecting on the institute’s scientific excellence, policy impact, capacity-building, and the benefits provided to members
- Overseeing external evaluations of IIASA research activities
- Provide leadership to IIASA in major grant proposals and ensure that this helps the institute to achieve its strategic and research goals
- Lead IIASA strategic initiatives
- Foster scientific relations between IIASA and research partners world-wide, with particular emphasis on the National Member Organizations (NMOs)
- Represent IIASA and its research with high-level stakeholders, such as governments, international organizations, funding bodies, NGOs and private sector partners
- Facilitate and nurture a climate of open scientific debate, and foster good scientific practice and adherence to the highest ethical standards
- Promote diversity in scientific leadership positions
- Contribute to attracting and retaining the best scientific talent at IIASA and ensure that they find an intellectually stimulating, enabling and conducive research environment
- Provide strategic direction to the institute’s capacity development and training programs
- Oversee knowledge and data management at IIASA
- Promote IIASA values throughout the organization
- Ensure the compliance of the programs and departments to the administrative, legal and governance requirements of IIASA
- Any other function allocated by the IIASA Director General/CEO.
Skills and Requirements:
Applicants must have a PhD in a field relevant to IIASA research as well as exceptional scientific credentials and broad recognition by the international scientific community. This includes a proven track record of high impact peer-reviewed publications, demonstrated ability to garner external funding and appropriate peer driven awards and recognitions. The successful candidate will have experience in leading interdisciplinary research groups, change management and broad scientific knowledge in a wide range of natural and social sciences including mathematics, as well as an appreciation and understanding of the application of systems analysis approaches to global and universal problems. The incumbent must have at least 15 years of leadership experience in progressively higher research management positions in addition to excellent organizational, communication and diplomatic skills. They should be value driven and display exemplary executive team capabilities.
The position is full-time and ideally, the successful candidate will be able to take up the assignment by 1 October 2019. An initial fixed-term appointment of five years will be offered, with the possibility of extension by mutual consent between the IIASA Council, the IIASA Director General/CEO, and the incumbent. The place of work is Laxenburg, Austria and the incumbent is expected to travel frequently as part of their duties.
IIASA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package (moving and settlement allowances, educational grants for children of school age, five weeks’ annual vacation, and paid home leave). IIASA salaries are exempt from taxation in the host country of Austria but subject to the principle of income aggregation.
