Post-doctoral Position in Fluid Mechanics in the Field of Hydropower
The Division of Fluid and Experimental Mechanics within the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) conducts research and teaching in the field of hydropower. Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energies in the world and accounts for about 17% of the electricity production worldwide. It is facing new technical challenges with the introduction of intermittent renewable energy resources, refurbishment of aging machines, adapting to the climate changes and satisfying new regulations.
The Division of Fluid and Experimental Mechanics now offers a post-doctoral position in the subject fluid mechanics with application to hydraulic turbines. The position is part of a larger European project with participants from Spain, Norway and Sweden.
The subject fluid mechanics works with turbulent, multiphase and porous flow coupled to industrial manufacturing methods, flow optimization and flow design for energy applications as well as magneto-hydrodynamic.
The Division has via the John Field Laboratory access to state of the art measurement methods and large computational resources.
The project aims to develop a novel technique to mitigate the pressure pulsations found in hydraulic turbines at certain operating conditions. Both numerical and experimental investigations will be performed at different scales, from the laboratory to full-scale machine’s scales.
The chosen candidate will be responsible for the implementation and experimental investigation of the novel technique where pressure, stress and velocity measurements will be performed. The candidate will participate to the supervision of PhD students involved in the project. The candidate may also work with numerical simulations and stability analysis function of her/his skills and interest.
The project implies measurements at different facilities in Sweden and Norway where longer visits are planned to perform measurements. The position is 2 years with the possibility for 2 additional years. Some teaching and subject related responsibility may be included.
You received a PhD degree in fluid mechanics during the last 3 years or will defend your PhD thesis during 2019 in the area of experimental fluid mechanics. A good knowledge of English is mandatory. Knowledge in fluid numerical simulations, stability analysis, hydraulic turbines, turbine model testing, prototype testing and vortex flows is a merit.
Our research group consists mostly of men why we are happy to see female applicant. Provided that the qualifications are otherwise equal, the underrepresented gender will be given precedence.
In case of different interpretations of the English and Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.
