Haywood Waterways Association, Inc. (HWA) is a nationally recognized non-profit organization located in Waynesville, NC. The mission of HWA is to maintain and improve water quality in the Pigeon River watershed. This is accomplished through science based education and outreach, and working collaboratively with a variety of partners (government agencies, businesses, landowners, community groups) to implement water quality improvement projects. 

Position Responsibilities:

The ED leads and directs the work of the organization. All work is accomplished through positive collaboration with community friends and partners. The ED is responsible for:

  • Creating a supportive work environment for HWA staff 
  • Generating revenue to support programs through grants, fundraising and memberships
  • Strategically directing and overseeing the implementation of water quality improvement projects, including the administration of associated funds
  • Providing for environmental education throughout the county by engaging with partners, including the production of our popular Kids in the Creek program
  • Engaging with a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors to promote organizational effectiveness and oversight
  • Because of the nature of our work, applicants should plan to live in or near Haywood County

Preferred Skills and Experience:

The following qualities will lend merit to applicants:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree plus five years experience in a leadership/managerial role preferred
  • Fundamental understanding of watershed and water quality management, especially as it relates to stream restoration and stormwater management
  • Non-profit management
  • Grant writing, including collaboration with private, local, state and federal partners
  • Fundraising
  • Management of HWA budget and finances
  • Project management, including the administration of associated funding sources 
  • Program or team management
  • Effective communication with diverse audiences
  • Ability to identify and implement organizational improvements

Benefits

We offer expense reimbursement, travel (based on federal rate), flexible hours and paid time off. We do have office space in the Town of Waynesville, but allow for flexibility in working from home as necessary. In addition, we have an Individual Coverage Health Care Reimbursement Agreement for those who qualify.
