About the Project:

During the past decade Pakistan had made significant progress towards improving access to WASH services and had managed to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for water and sanitation, however the increased access in sanitation and water services and facilities in the country has not yet resulted in the significant improvement of health outcome for children (under 5). In Pakistan, currently 60% waste remains un-collected, 1 in 10 person does open defecation (about 25 million out of which around 20 million live in Punjab province), 93% wastewater remains untreated and 42% population is without basic sanitation.

In October 2018, the Prime Minister of Pakistan launched Clean Green Pakistan Movement (CGPM) to address issues of mal-nutrition, stunting and child deaths due to diarrhoea that are directly and / or indirectly associated with un-improved WASH services. WaterAid and RB joined hands with the Government of Pakistan and signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Ministry of Climate Change (Focal Ministry for CGPM) to support the Clean Green Pakistan Movement (CGPM). Under the MOU; RB and WaterAid have also committed to the Government of Pakistan to support different initiatives of the provincial governments in addition to the federal government that contributes to overall vision of the CGPM.

In this regard, under the overall umbrella of CGPM this WASH program has been designed to assist HUD&PHED Punjab in the implementation of Government of Punjab’s integrated WASH strategy not only to achieve ODF status through direct implementation by HUD&PHED but also to bring improvement in  prevention and control of WASH related diseases. In order to achieve project outcomes on-job technical assistance will be provided to HUD&PHED staff at provincial office, Community Development Officers (CDOs), Community Based Motivators (CBMs), Social Mobilizers and Community Resource Persons (CRPs) for triggering the mobilization process following “Pakistan Approach to Total Sanitation” in targeted communities and also to replicate same model in other villages within the targeted districtsand beyond.
