Pennsylvania Sea Grant, a partnership of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Penn State University, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, is dedicated to promoting the ecological and economic sustainability of Pennsylvania’s coastal resources through the development of science-based research, education, and extension programs. Pennsylvania Sea Grant is part of a national network of 34 Sea Grant College Programs.

Due to state and federal COVID-19 restrictions and protocols, candidate must be able to work remotely and independently. However, presence at Pennsylvania Sea Grant office will be necessary when appropriate. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship

Details: 

Pennsylvania Sea Grant seeks a one-year climate resiliency fellow to assist with implementing climate and community resilience programs in the Erie, Pennsylvania region.  Coastal communities are becoming increasingly vulnerable to both the short and long-term impacts of extreme weather and climate variability. The region has been facing weather events such as coastal flooding, high wind, tornados, blizzards, and severe storms. Overcoming these events and rising above the aftermath has become a the new normal for residents, business owners, and community leaders. To assist the Erie community, Pennsylvania Sea Grant has been a leader in facilitating the Community Resilience Action Network of Erie (CRANE), which is an alliance of agencies and organizations in the regional that are dedicated to projects and programs that build resilience and help connect Erie residents with resources to plan and prepare for disasters in an organized and pre-emptive manner. Pennsylvania Sea Grant is seeking a driven, energetic, and dynamic individual to assist with implementing climate and community resilience programs in the Erie area, including participation in CRANE, assisting with climate education and outreach, engaging stakeholders and community members, and connecting with community partners.  

This position will work closely with universities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to develop educational and community engagement opportunities and help promote projects and programs using social media and web-based platforms. This fellowship opportunity will work independently, with Pennsylvania Sea Grant staff, CRANE partners, and in cooperation with other Sea Grant programs, partner agencies, and organizations to accomplish the goals and outcomes relevant to the Resilient Communities and Economies focus areas within the Pennsylvania Sea Grant strategic plan and National Sea Grant visioning plans, including:

  • Develop educational and outreach materials relevant to climate resilience and adaptation that connect to Pennsylvania Sea Grant and CRANE’s missions.
  • Work with Sea Grant and CRANE partners to implement a community-driven strategy that connects and engages with local stakeholders, identifies, and prioritizes needs, and implements actions that improve community resilience.
  • Support and help facilitate regular CRANE monthly meetings. 
  • Assist with promotion of the CRANE program through website updates and social media engagement.
  • Collaborate with Pennsylvania Sea Grant staff and other Sea Grant programs to advance connections and promote public opportunities and events.
  • Assist with existing grant funded projects and help identify opportunities for additional funding support.
  • Regular communication with Pennsylvania Sea Grant staff, relevant stakeholders, state agencies, non-governmental organizations, and others.

Occasional weekend and evening hours are anticipated. This position may require local travel, and overnight travel for statewide meetings and conferences. Occasional travel throughout the U.S. for regional and national meetings and conferences may also be expected. Other related duties as assigned or requested, and the program reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire.

Start date: As soon as possible, but flexible into June 2022 pending graduation dates. 

Qualifications: 

This position typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience 

1) Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, aquatic sciences, geology, planning, conservation management, marine and coastal resources, or related area.

2) Strong writing, data reporting, and organizational skills. The ability to work independently, communicate effectively to individuals and larger groups and to accurately synthesize and deliver information is preferred. Virtual and in-person communication and engagement with various Pennsylvania stakeholders is expected.  Interest and/or experience in climate resilience and community engagement is preferred.
