Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. 

The 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP), adopted by the international community at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in 2012, aims to support regional and national initiatives on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and scale up the implementation of SCP practices with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. The implementation of the 10YFP is now recognized as a key implementation mechanism of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its implementation forms the first target under Sustainable Development Goal 12 of that agenda. UN Environment is serving as the Secretariat of the 10YFP, which is located in the Economy Division (www.unep.org/10yfp).

The UN Environment Communications and Environment Affairs internship is for three (3) months with a possibility for extension depending on the needs of the Organization.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they areas signed.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of the Secretariat for the 10YFP, the intern will:

  • Provide support to the implementation of the 10YFP communications and resource mobilization strategies
  • Design and develop informational tools relating to SCP and the 10YFP
  • Undertake desktop research for outreach activities
  • Complete mapping exercises for resource mobilization and coordination purposes
  • Support the development of Newsletters and updates
  • Support the organization of events 
  • Draft articles and posts for newsletters and social networks
  • Attend meetings, take notes, and follow up on action items
  • Respond to ad hoc requests for support

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; 

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of study: Masters studies in Communications, Political science, Economics or Environmental related topics preferred.

Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
