The Rivers Trust (RT) a leading environmental charity wishes to appoint a new Chief Executive of high calibre. The trustees seek an individual with exceptional strategic vision, proven leadership and managerial skills. The candidate will build on The Rivers Trust’s strong reputation as the trans-national umbrella body of one of the fastest growing UK environmental movements.

The Rivers Trust movement celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2019 and has grown at pace to some 60 trusts across the UK and Ireland, all focussed on the practical delivery of on-the-ground restoration and improvement. As the umbrella body RT represents the wider movement, providing leadership, support and guidance and is well-networked with government, industry leaders (water companies in particular) and leading NGO’s including WWF and Angling Trust, to substantially influence environmental policy and key strategic investment decisions.

With direct involvement in over 25 UK and EU projects, including EU LIFE+ & Interreg V programmes with 20 committed and highly qualified staff, the Trust is heavily engaged in its aim to explain and promote sustainable and integrated catchment management by applying the Ecosystem Approach at a catchment scale across UK & Ireland.

The Chief Executive will report through the Chairman to an influential board of Trustees. The successful applicant is likely to be an established figure in the environmental field, already a person of influence, well versed in the challenges that face our communities. The role presents an outstanding opportunity to influence policy, funding and government’s resolve to tackle the problems of flooding, abstraction, pollution, loss of habitat, fisheries and wider biodiversity in this critical time; bringing to life the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan and commitment to be the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than we found it.

The Trust’s principal office is in Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, where the finance team are based, however, applicants may work remotely as RT staff and member trusts are dispersed across the UK. As such the role will feature frequent travel to London and other parts of the UK as well as EU partner locations.

Interviews will be held in London on Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 March 2019 (tbc) and candidates are encouraged to attend the Trust’s headquarters in Cornwall should they be shortlisted as part of their application process.
