This position is responsible for leading the Sustainability & Safeguards Unit in development and management of the Sustainability and Safeguards program which cuts across all areas of the organization. 

The position’s main function is to lead the integration of environmental and social safeguards (“safeguards”), poverty reduction, gender equality, and social inclusion considerations into GGGI programs and projects implemented by Green Growth Planning & Implementation (GGPI) and Investment and Policy Solution Divisions (IPSD).

INTRODUCTION

Based in Seoul, The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is an intergovernmental organization founded to support and promote a model of economic growth known as "green growth", which targets key aspects of economic performance such a poverty reduction, gender equality, job creation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. GGGI works with countries around the world, building their capacity and working collaboratively on green growth policies that can impact the lives of millions. The organization partners with countries, multilateral institutions, government bodies, and private sector to help build economies that grow strongly and are more efficient and sustainable in the use of natural resources, less carbon intensive, and more resilient to climate change.

GGGI has a diverse portfolio of programs in developing countries around the world. These in-country programs, together with global products and services, focus on delivering results through an integrated approach of evidence-based green growth planning and implementation aligned to countries’ development priorities. The organization also focuses on knowledge development and management activities which build a strong theoretical and empirical basis for green growth, while providing concrete options and guidance for policymakers; as well as building the conditions for public and private green infrastructure investments.                                                                                      

The Sustainability and Safeguards Unit (SSU) is situated within the Investment and Policy Solutions Division (IPSD) and has oversight and technical leadership on gender and social inclusion, and environmental and social safeguards throughout the GGGI program.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for leading the Sustainability & Safeguards Unit in development and management of the Sustainability and Safeguards program which cuts across all areas of the organization.

The position’s main function is to lead the integration of environmental and social safeguards (“safeguards”), poverty reduction, gender equality, and social inclusion considerations into GGGI programs and projects implemented by Green Growth Planning & Implementation (GGPI) and Investment and Policy Solution Divisions (IPSD).

PURPOSE

  • Provides overall management of the unit
  • Provides technical services within GGGI and to partner institutions on safeguards, poverty reduction, gender, and social inclusion (SPRSI) in green growth.
  • Develops knowledge products and delivery mechanisms to integrate safeguards, poverty reduction, gender, and social inclusion (SPRSI) objectives into GGGI programs and projects.
  • Builds GGGI’s institutional infrastructure for mainstreaming of SPRSI and collaboration across units and divisions
  • Evaluates program results and provides thought leadership and expertise in SPRSI as it relates to green growth and sustainable development.
  • Forges strategic partnerships in SPRSI to advance GGGI’s green growth agenda, especially in-country.

ENGAGEMENT

  • Empowers and develops staff to integrate SPRSI in programs and projects under their management.
  • Inspires and guides corporate and country team staff working on SPRSI.
  • Engages, compels and retains donors and external partners through showcasing how green growth has resulted in positive SPRSI outcomes. 

DELIVERY

  • Ensures that SPRSI is fully integrated in GGGI Project Cycle Management, including  in key corporate reporting mechanisms.
  • Builds a comprehensive service offering that caters to country programs, global knowledge products and green investments.
  • Develops stories of change to inspire staff, government partners, donors and other external stakeholders.
  • Holds managerial responsibilities for program planning, budgeting, reporting and staff supervision.

REQUIREMENTS (only recruitment purpose)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent in Gender Studies, Sociology/Anthropology/Social Development, International Development/Affairs, Public Policy, Economics, Human Rights or other social science preferably involving gender studies.
  • Preferably 10-15 years of relevant experience in developing countries with good knowledge of one or more regions where GGGI is active at senior levels (e.g. leading projects). The application of safeguards, gender and social development related to environmental or green growth issues will be considered particularly relevant.
  • At least 10 years of management experience in international development
  • Experience working in the operations departments of multilateral or bilateral development institutions is desirable.
  • International experience working in several countries, including countries where GGGI is present is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills is a must. Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish, or other language of GGGI country programs is desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively with people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.

  • Excellent facilitation and capacity building skills
