Job description  

In this role you will protect and enhance the Environment Agency's reputation by working flexibly within the Government Relations team and responding to work pressures. The role works across the organisation, which may range from issues of flood risk, environment protection, planning to water resources and quality. You may lead on the following areas of work:
• support our work with ministers, private offices and officials
• maintain relationships with key departmental teams including Defra and BEIS 
• maintain positive working relationships with internal and external contacts for sharing advice and intelligence
• keep the business updated on relevant parliamentary intelligence
• lead on the preparations for the Environment Agency’s input to select committee inquiries
• support Area teams on local engagement with elected representatives and plan national engagement when appropriate 
• play an active role in incident response

The team  

Government Relations is a busy team based in London. We lead on the Environment Agency’s input to parliamentary processes such as select committee inquiries, parliamentary questions and debates, ensure ministers have timely and accurate briefing and manage ministerial correspondence. We work with Environment Agency teams and senior leadership, including our Chair and Chief Executive, and with Defra and other government departments to build the reputation of the Environment Agency with Government and Parliament.

Experience/skills required  

• A good understanding of parliamentary and Government processes
• Good political judgment and awareness 
• The ability to work well under pressure, knowing when to refer to colleagues for guidance and support
• The ability to work closely with senior managers and foster a network of contacts, building rapport and relationships quickly
• Excellent written and verbal skills
• An attention to detail and capable of presenting information in a clear style and format
• A good understanding of the Environment Agency’s business 
• A flexible approach and ability to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines

In this role you may be required to be part of a duty rota which supports the senior management team during incidents. Occasionally this includes out of hours working. This role will be based from our Marsham Street office in London. As the role is based in London you will require an enhanced level of security check, a key component of which is a minimum of 3 years UK residency. This role is eligible for inner London weighting (£3,579 per annum).
