Job Title: Associate Scientist II – Geospatial Analyst

Location:  Boulder, Colorado

Type: Full-time, Exempt

Position Term:  1-year term, with the possibility of extension

What You Will Do:

This is a new, full-time, 1-year term position (with possibility of extension) that will support the geospatial development, application and assessment of the community WRF-Hydro system for regional- and continental-scale hydrologic forecasting. The successful candidate will help implement and expand the use of GIS tools to characterize key hydrologic variables that are used to drive WRF-Hydro. The incumbent will also help support and enhance existing geospatial processing tools related to WRF-Hydro and help benchmark the WRF-Hydro system in a variety of different test configurations and study domains.


  • Develops new data processing, analysis, and visualization scripts for the pre-and post-processing of geospatial and hydrometeorological data 
    using GIS and other geospatial methods and libraries. Supports user requests related to the WRF-Hydro GIS Pre-processing and visualization tools.
  • Perform analysis tasks and workflows related to evaluating the skill and efficiency of WRF-Hydro hydrologic simulations and forecasts. Obtain 
    and quality control observational data sets and meteorological forcing datasets for benchmarking experiments.
  • Contributes to reports on research findings and to the presentation of results at meetings and conferences.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in geography, geosciences, hydrologic science, atmospheric science, physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering, plus 2 – 3 years related experience as an Associate Scientist I (or equivalent position). (A master’s degree in one of these fields is desirable).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Developed knowledge of geospatial analysis, with special emphasis on hydrological applications
  • Developed knowledge in desktop GIS applications such as ArcGIS or QGIS.
  • Demonstrated skill working with Python for scientific programming, specifically working with geospatial libraries such as arcpy, OGR, GDAL, etc.
  • Basic knowledge in processing common geographic and hydrologic data formats and data structures (e.g. GeoTiff, netCDF, GeoDatabase/GeoPackage, WaterML).
  • Ability to participate in meetings with our collaborative partners (e.g., NOAA, USGS, etc.). 
  • Ability to contribute to technical documentation related to Python workflows and tools. 
  • Willingness and ability to travel periodically for conferences and external collaboration.
  • Strong skills in working collaboratively on a team.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in visualizing and analyzing multi-dimensional gridded datasets with Python.
  • Experience with other languages such as FORTRAN, R, or NCL are also desirable.
  • Familiarity with hydrological modeling.
  • Statistical evaluation of model outputs and observational datasets.
  • Experience with geospatial big data processing workflows.
