Position Overview: The Geohydrology Section of the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) has an open position for an individual to develop and lead a field-based hydrogeochemical research program from the site- to regional-scale. The Geohydrology Section conducts both fundamental and applied research on hydrologic and hydrogeochemical systems ranging in scale from site-specific to the river basin and regional aquifer level. Scientific staff are expected to develop research programs that are of national stature and highly relevant to Kansas. Areas of research include: physical, stratigraphic, and geochemical characterization of sedimentary aquifer systems; surface-water/groundwater interactions; spatial data analysis/geostatistics; assessment of sustainable yields in complex hydrologic systems; simulation of flow and transport processes; technology for subsurface characterization; contaminant transport and source identification; and groundwater thermometry. Activities of the Geohydrology Section are complemented by researchers in other sections of the KGS whose interests include surface geophysical methods, geologic characterization, and petroleum generation/migration. The section maintains a program of public information and education, and has extensive interactions with water research and management entities at the state, local, and federal levels. The KGS is a research and service unit of The University of Kansas (KU), thereby providing opportunities to collaborate with KU faculty and students in other departments and research groups. Salary, Employment Status, and Fringe Benefits: Starting salary negotiable depending on qualifications. Full-time, permanent position with 12-month appointment to faculty-equivalent staff at The University of Kansas, subject to annual review. Benefits include university staff privileges; sabbatical eligibility; 22 days vacation leave, 12 days sick leave, and 9 holidays annually; group medical, life insurance, and retirement program options.

Responsibilities

  • 75%: Lead and coordinate KGS activities focused on water quality and hydrogeology.
    • Conduct fundamental and applied research on groundwater quality and hydrogeology that is both of national stature and highly relevant to Kansas.
    • Communicate the results of research in peer-reviewed publications and to both scientific and lay audiences.
    • Develop research proposals for external funding.
  • 15%: Support KGS efforts in the areas of technical service and communication, education, and public information.
  • 10%: Oversee laboratory and supervise laboratory assistant.

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) record of accomplishments in resume/curriculum vitae, (2) descriptions of research and educational experiences in cover letter, (3) information from professional references, and (4) college transcripts.

Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in natural sciences or engineering with an emphasis on aqueous geochemistry related to water resources. Degree must be completed by appointment start date
  2. Research/publications on the application of aqueous geochemistry to determination of sources, transport, and fate of natural and/or anthropogenic constituents.
  3. Strong theoretical training supplemented with practical field experience.
  4. Demonstrated ability or potential to provide scientific leadership in research on water quality.
  5. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Strong background in hydrogeochemistry applied to regional-scale groundwater investigations.
  2. Experience with groundwater quality in unconsolidated and consolidated sedimentary aquifers.
  3. Experience in groundwater-surface-water interactions controlling water quality.
  4. Experience with reactive transport modeling.
  5. Documented ability to publish in peer-reviewed outlets.

Section resources related to this position include a water chemistry lab, equipped for determination of inorganic constituents, and a half-time analytical assistant.
