Valley Water’s mission is to provide Silicon Valley with safe, clean water for a healthy life, environment, and economy. We manage an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection, and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County’s 2 million residents.

Our popular internship program provides excellent opportunities to explore your chosen career path, develop industry-specific skills and knowledge, and increase your professional network! Summer 2022 will be our first-ever hybrid Summer Internship Program and will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while working both on-site and remote. Each intern will have a mentor and will be given professional development training, participate in networking events, attend both virtual and in-person meetings, and prepare a Capstone presentation at the end of the program.

The Environmental Planning Department provides overall project planning, environmental document preparation, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance, and permitting services. They also manage Safe, Clean Water Projects and provide surface water quality expertise. The water resource specialists manage ongoing safe, clean water projects and monitor water quality in lakes and streams throughout Santa Clara County.

This position is a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.

Required License or Certificate


• Pursuing a major in Environmental Science/Studies, Geology, Natural Resource Management, Hydrology, Chemistry, Ecology, Limnology, or other related fields.

• Coursework experience with GIS, data analysis, and statistics.


• Conduct water quality studies in reservoirs and streams.

• Assist with environmental data analysis and GIS mapping.

• Assist with stormwater compliance activities.

• If allowed, complete field visits this summer.

• Attend the all-day virtual Intern orientation on Monday, June 13th, 2022.

Selection Process


Mark S. has a B.S. in Environmental Geology from UC Santa Cruz. He is a Ph.D. Candidate in Environmental Systems at UC Merced where his research focuses on mercury remediation in aquatic systems. He is a certified lake manager interested in improving water quality in lakes, reservoirs, and streams. A Valley Water employee of seven years, Mark feels fortunate to have built his career protecting water quality in our back yard. When he isn’t working, you can find Mark rock climbing in Yosemite, mountain biking in the Santa Cruz mountains, or skiing in the Sierra.


The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate (Junior or Senior) and higher graduate-level students who will be enrolled in a community college/university for Fall 2022.

• Pass a pre-employment screening process to include a background check

• Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment

• Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program (June to August)
