Job Description | The Virginia Department of Forestry looking for a Bay Watershed Specialist to join the Department’s Central Region. The position will be assigned to the Rappahannock Work Area, which serves Culpeper, Fauquier, Greene, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock Counties. This position will also perform duties in the Potomac Work Area, which includes Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties This position is part of a USDA grant-funded program for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed in Northern Virginia and Central Virginia. Duties include: work with VDOF foresters and other partner agencies in identifying and engaging landowners and implementing riparian forest buffer projects; implement actions in the Virginia Riparian Buffer Plan to establish new buffers and conserve existing buffers; provide technical assistance and training to natural resource personnel regarding forest buffer establishment; make timely and appropriate silvicultural recommendations regarding riparian area restoration and management; establish cooperative partnerships with other government and non-government agencies and organizations; implement agency strategies and programs involving Chesapeake Bay specific watershed planting projects and initiatives; monitor and track project successes and failures and respond accordingly. The successful candidate will be assigned to the VDOF’s Office in Warrenton, VA. Within 6-months of hire, the candidate must reside in either the Rappahannock or Potomac Work Areas (counties listed above). This is a grant funded position with term of employment specific to the grant, from 10 months to two years. |
Minimum Qualifications | Knowledge of silviculture, watershed protection and forest health; experience in technical and professional natural resource work; ability to work independently; excellent organizational skills; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel from various state and federal agencies, local planners, cooperators, and the public; public speaking skills and experience; demonstrated excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; valid driver’s license; ability to negotiate different types of forested terrain on foot; ability to travel around the state and stay overnight on occasion; and experience with and ability to use a PC and Microsoft Office software required. |
Preferred Qualifications | B.S. Degree in Forestry or Natural Resources |
Special Requirements | Must be able to obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicators permit within six months of employment. Selected candidate is required to pass a criminal background check and a drug test. |
