About the role
Water quality has been established as an area of APEM expertise for many years, but as our team expands we are looking to enhance our modelling capacity. You will work within a dynamic team of aquatic environmental scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, fisheries and natural and social capital, to deliver a range of projects for the UK water and energy industries, and their environmental regulators. The purpose of the role will be to enhance our ability to provide modelling approaches and outputs, as required in particular by the water and construction industries. The role will require the application of modelling packages (river, lake and/or coastal), in particular those recognised and used by regulatory authorities, and contributing to the identification of new modelling approaches. You will also work on water quality monitoring and environmental assessment projects, such as Drought Plan environmental assessments,
Key features of the Senior Consultant role will be managing a range of projects to ensure the delivery of high-quality outputs within budget. This role will also require contributing to or leading the production of competitive tenders and marketing our modelling capabilities to current and potential future clients.
You will be primarily desk-based, although site visits and client meetings will be required.

About you
You must have experience of applying standard modelling packages to water quality projects. These will include as a minimum one or more of the following: SIMCAT, SAGIS, CORMIX, lake phytoplankton prediction models or Farmscoper. As this is a senior role, we would ideally expect experience of working extensively in or with the consultancy sector.
You will be an enthusiastic self-starter with an interest in the environment. You will be qualified to a minimum of BSc. level in a relevant discipline, with evidence of experience relevant to the grade you are applying for. Whether you are an applicant with academic, regulatory, consultancy or third sector experience you will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a fast-paced commercial consultancy context through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally.
You will have good IT literacy and data analysis skills, will be numerate and have a good eye for detail. You will be able to demonstrate not just experience of applying models but also an understanding of why the models are used and how their outputs will be deployed.
Required skills:
- Typically 3-4 years’ professional experience
- Experience of working in a commercial consulting environment
- Experience in river, lake and/or coastal modelling packages
- Modelling experience as described above
- Programming and model development skills
- Project management experience
- Tendering/proposal writing experience
- Professional accreditation of working towards it
Desirable skills:
- A relevant higher degree
- An understanding of key UK environmental legislation
