About the role

Water quality has been established as an area of APEM expertise for many years, but as our team expands we are looking to enhance our modelling capacity. You will work within a dynamic team of aquatic environmental scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, water quality, fisheries and natural and social capital, to deliver a range of projects for the UK water and energy industries, and their environmental regulators.

The purpose of the role will be to increase our ability to provide water quality modelling approaches and outputs, as required in particular by the water and construction industries. The role will require the application of modelling packages (river, lake and/or coastal), in particular those recognised and used by regulatory authorities, and contributing to the identification of new modelling approaches. You will also work on water quality monitoring and environmental assessment projects, such as Drought Planning environmental assessments.

Key features of the Scientist role will be providing input into a range of projects to ensure the delivery of high-quality outputs within time and budget constraints.

You will be primarily desk-based, although site visits and client meetings may be required.

There are excellent opportunities for career progression and development.

Whether you are an applicant with academic, regulatory, consultancy, water industry or third sector experience you will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a fast-paced commercial consultancy context through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally.

You will have good IT literacy and data analysis skills, will be numerate and have a good eye for detail. You will be able to demonstrate not just experience of applying models but also an understanding of why the models are used and how their outputs will be usefully deployed.

You will have experience writing precise but accessible scientific reports..
