This sector work is underpinned by our specialist practices in evaluation and behavioural economics. ROLE DESCRIPTION:

The Climate Change & Resilience Specialist is a senior level position within the practice, overseeing business development, implementation and monitoring of climate change & resilience related projects and programmes within the practice. The specialist will provide thought leadership in the design of innovative solutions to climate change and resilience challenges facing agriculture in sub-Sharan Africa. The specialist will be responsible for originating new business, programme & project management and knowledge management within the AMD practice. The specialist will provide technical leadership and guidance on the development of pitches to prospective clients, proposals and on on-going projects in sub-Saharan Africa. The specialist is expected to utilize his/her network of contacts both in the public and private sectors to originate new business opportunities for AMD. The specialist will be expected to interface with bilateral and multilateral donors, UN agencies, private sector agribusinesses and foundations operating within the climate change space.   

Key areas of focus within the practice include climate-smart agriculture (education and policy); climate finance (UNFCC; GCF, Adaptation Fund etc) and resilience.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

New Business:

  • Establish and maintain relationships with clients through networking as measured by the number of solicitations to bid
  • Conduct presentations on Genesis projects and potential projects to prospective public and private sector clients
  • Constantly liaise with potential clients for new project opportunities
  • Lead the development of expressions of interest and technical proposals in collaboration with the BDU as necessary
  • Lead the development of proposal budgets in collaboration with the Partner
  • Provide ongoing support to the BDU when required in developing marketing material for the Company
  • Visit clients on regular basis to pitch new project ideas based on on-going work and own initiatives 

Knowledge Management and Solutions Development:

  • Provide thought leadership within the climate change & resilience space by presenting at relevant regional and international platforms
  • Develop and expand technical services lines in areas such as climate smart agriculture; resilience; climate finance and climate risk analysis
  • Develop and present technical sessions with AMD and across the Company to share technical agricultural insights and project activities
  • Mentor junior staff within the practice

Project Management:

  • Manage on-going projects to meet technical, revenue, profit and timeline targets by:
  • Communicating project clearly to both internal and external project staff
  • Developing project technical scope and timelines
  • Managing allocated programme and project budgets
  • Providing guidance to field-based staff as appropriate
  • Monitoring performance against workplan
  • Collating project documentation
  • Compiling technical reports as per contractual agreements with clients/funders
  • Providing feedback to relevant stakeholders 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong academic background – Minimum of a Master’s degree in an analytical field of study. Preference for Climate Change/Agriculture/Economics as area of specialisation/major(s).
  • At least 3 - 4 years consulting experience and a passion for consulting
  • Strong research, analytical and lateral thought processes
  • Demonstratable experience in the field of climate change is a definite requirement (4 to 6 years as a minimum)
  • Excellent English communication and writing skills – ability to communicate at all levels
  • Proactive self-starter who is able to be assertive
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-cultural team as well as independently
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Highly numerate
  • Entrepreneurial in nature
  • Strong relationship management skills
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with ability to prioritise
