Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Center for Natural Hazards Resilience conducts research and education to enhance the resilience of the nation’s people, infrastructure, economies, and the natural environment to the impacts of coastal hazards such as floods and hurricanes, including the effects of climate change. Examples of Resilience Center projects and programs include: – Advancing the capabilities of the ADCIRC storm surge model and the ADCIRC Prediction System to deliver high-resolution storm surge and flooding predictions for approaching storms – Studies to advance coastal community planning to build resilience – Assistance to federal, state, and local governments to develop better predictions of coastal hazards and to integrate these into better mitigation, response and recovery planning – Improved communication of present day and future coastal risk to multiple audiences – Educating the next generation of hazards researchers and practitioners |

Position Summary | Selected individual will work on enhancements to the ADCIRC Prediction System real time coastal water level / inundation forecasting system including implementation and testing of data assimilation, enhanced meteorological forcing and extension to include freshwater and compound flooding. Additional opportunities may include assisting with coastal water level reanalysis studies and predicting water levels under future climate scenarios. The selected individual will be expected to initiate and collaborate on manuscripts for publication, present results at conferences, assist with proposal generation. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | PhD in engineering, physical oceanography, physics or another field closely related to coastal hydrodynamics. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Experience with numerical modeling of coastal water levels and analysis of coastal water level observational data. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Knowledge of and experience with Fortran, Matlab, and Python computer languages, and high-performance computing. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a group. Strong writing skills, e.g., as demonstrated by publications. |
