Summary
This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Field Organization, South East Area, National Sedimentation Laboratory & Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit in Oxford, MS.
In this position, you will support a hydrologic research program using field data collection methods to accurately record changes in the landscape through time.
Duties
- Collects water samples from the field using specialty equipment and defined procedures (e.g., automated samplers).
- Prepares water samples for analysis using defined methods.
- Selects the best method for presenting the data and prepares drafts, drawings, charts, figures and reports illustrating and summarizing research results.
- Keeping exact and detailed records of data obtained from experiments.
- Assists the research scientist in making accurate research interpretation and drawing accurate conclusions.

At the GS-05:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with collecting hydrologic field measurements (i.e. stage, level, discharge); keeping detailed records of data obtained from hydrological measurements; and operating basic hydrologic equipment common to a laboratory or field setting.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with (a) major study in an appropriate field of science, engineering, construction, or industrial technology or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses related to engineering, industrial technology, construction drafting, surveying, physical science, biology, or mathematics.

A combination of education and experience.
At the GS-06:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting hydrologic field measurements (i.e. stage, level, discharge); utilizing weirs, flumes, or velocity sensors to collect hydrologic data; operating hydrologic or water quality sampling equipment such as automated samplers; and compiling geological or hydrological data for reports.

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Hydrology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resources.
OR
An appropriate combination of graduate education and experience.
At the GS-07:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience installing, adjusting, inspecting, and servicing equipment used for the collection of ground and surface water data; making technical studies of hydrologic data collected in the field; and preparing hydrological material for publication, such as, drafts, maps and other illustrative material.
OR
Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Hydrology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resources.
OR
A combination of graduate education and experience as described above.
