The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has an exciting opportunity for a Research Analyst who will be responsible for supporting IWMI researchers by performing Remote Sensing & GIS operations.

THE ROLE

  • Perform GIS/RS operations working within the research for development focusing on Water Data Science and Digital Innovation, including, but not limited to, geometrical corrections, projection standardization, orthorectification, image classification, application of standard algorithms/models, time series analysis using multi-sensor satellite imageries, and preparation of standard outputs.
  • Develop spatial models and spatial analysis for bulk data processing.
  • Create geospatial datasets and cartographic outputs from primary/secondary data sources.
  • Provide technical support to researchers in carrying out complex geospatial analysis for various research/management projects at IWMI headquarters and in the regional offices.
  • Assist in the collection, compilation, evaluation, interpretation, maintenance and distribution of spatial and non-spatial data (and metadata) through the Water Data Portal while also adhering to IWMI/international standards.
  • Assist in training and capacity building activities of the Digital Innovation unit.

Requirements

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in information technology, geography, agriculture, water resources or environmental sciences with a focus on GIS/databases/information management, masters preferred.
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience at an entry-level position in the fields of GIS and RS.
  • Working experience in Esri’s ArcGIS and associated extensions, and ERDAS IMAGINE; knowledge of other GIS software such as ENVI, QGIS, MapInfo, etc., will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of the challenges posed by global environmental change, on the one hand, and rapidly developing GIS/RS techniques, on the other.
  • Knowledge of Metadata standards and platforms.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

This is a nationally recruited staff position and only citizens of Sri Lanka are encouraged to apply. IWMI offers a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes transport and health insurance. The duration of the contract will be for a three-year period with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funds.
