| Scope of Position | The person in this position will help coordinate and participate in a variety of field and laboratory research activities, providing day-to-day support for NGRREC principal scientists, visiting scholars, and research equipment. The primary responsibility of this position will be to collaborate with NGRREC principal scientists in investigations of wetlands ecology and biogeochemistry in the Mississippi River Confluence Region. This region is of significant interest for watershed health reasons and has a large number of wetland mitigation and restoration projects on federal, state, and NGO lands. In addition to collaboration with NGRREC principal scientists, collaboration and coordination with individuals at federal, state, and NGO organizations will be critical to develop and implement wetlands ecology research in the region. The Assistant Scientist-Wetlands Ecology will have knowledge of all NGRREC Research programs and work closely with NGRREC scientists to supervise technicians. Because of the close working relationship with NGRREC principal scientists, the Assistant Scientist-Wetlands Ecology will have the opportunity to apply knowledge of natural resources and biological systems to develop collaborative and independent research projects occurring at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC). |
| Key Measurable Expectations | · Oversee all aspects of wetlands ecology research support for principal scientists including staff, equipment, and facilities.· Supervise, train, and coordinate schedules of technical staff and research associates in wetlands ecology research in both the field and laboratory.· Develop and maintain a database of wetlands in the Mississippi River Confluence Region.· Oversee animal collection and identification in wetlands ecology research projects, as well as maintain updated IACUC training certifications.· Oversee collection, processing, and laboratory analysis of water, sediment, and plant samples.· Oversee collection and analysis of vegetation data associated with wetlands ecology research projects.· Manage laboratory operations by ensuring functionality of instruments, processing and analyses of biological samples, developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for future research projects, and instructing technical staff in SOPs.· Supervise and train technical staff and research associates in field station operations and use of NGRREC trucks, ORVs, boats, and trailers.· Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with outside organizations to advance research initiatives related to NGRREC’s mission.· Participate in outreach activities by delivering presentations to various groups and the public, and contributing to educational programs (e.g., event activity leader, managing a NGRREC booth/table at special events, advisor in intern research programs, etc.).· Position may perform independent research under the direction of the Executive Director up to 25% of the time.Collaborate with NGRREC principal scientists on development of grant proposals and/or conducting original research.Collaborate with NGRREC principal scientists to publish research results in peer reviewed scientific journals and at professional meetings. |
| Minimum Qualifications: | Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions · M.S. degree in ecology, biology, natural resources, or related discipline is required.· At least 2 years of applicable research experience in a professional setting, including experience conducting field and/or laboratory experiments (and associated statistical analyses).· Proficiency in the use of software tools including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office package, R, and ArcGIS, as well as a willingness to learn new computer applications.· Evidence of scientific productivity (e.g., publications, presentations, reports, etc.).· Ability to effectively work individually and in a team setting. |
| Preferred Qualifications | · Record of peer-reviewed publications.· Experience mentoring undergraduate research interns and technical staff.· Familiarity and experience in wetlands ecology research.· Laboratory experience processing and analyzing water, sediment, and plant samples. |
