Job Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe position is an exciting opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary, collaborative scientific and stakeholder group that is seeking innovative solutions to long-standing and pressing dryland issues. The postdoctoral researcher will gain extensive experience working in a leadership capacity on NSF-funded projects and future proposals and collaborating with pioneer water, data, and systems scientists from renowned institutions such as the San Diego Supercomputer Center, System Dynamics Society, University of Bergen, and Sandia National Laboratories. The job duties and responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher will be to lead research and develop models that address pressing community issues supporting the New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute in the following projects:

NM Universities Produced Water Synthesis Project Stakeholder-driven modeling component of a hybrid system dynamics – agent-based model that will illustrate the impacts of produced water management strategies on New Mexico’s water budget.  A suite of system dynamics water budget models for New Mexico, including customized regional policy-oriented models that integrate socio-economic factors. Seek external funding through writing and submitting grant proposals.
 Publish papers in peer-reviewed academic journals. Assist in the research training of graduate students associated with the Water Science and Management graduate degree program.

Note: The postdoc is responsible for performing duties in line with meeting NMSU LEADS 2025 strategic goals of enhancing student success & social mobility, elevating research & creativity, amplifying extension & outreach, and building a robust university system.

Preferred QualificationsPhD in a discipline related to computer simulation modeling (e.g., system dynamics, agent-based modeling or network analysis) from an accredited institution of higher education. Experience in hydrologic modeling is desirable. Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to systems science, hydrology, arid region issues, multi-disciplinary teamwork, network analysis, stakeholder engagement, and GIS.

Other Departmental RequirementsValid Driver’s License. Must be able to obtain an NMSU driving permit within three months of employment. Must be able to travel out of state and overnight. Requires travel to field sites, presentations, etc.
