International Water Management Institute (IWMI) seeks applications from suitable candidates to undertake a consultancy assignment under IWMI’s project “Towards Brown Gold? Reimagining off grid sanitation in rapidly urbanising areas in Asia and Africa”.

Project Background

The project aims to develop innovative and inclusive circular economy-based approaches for sustainable fecal sludge management (FSM) that are people centred, sustainable, equitable and also contribute to economic growth, using a bottom up socio-technical processes in Wa, North Western Ghana.

Scope of Work

  • Contribute to the project work streams, from research design to data collection, analysis and scientific reporting.
  • Play a key role in coordinating, supporting and undertaking field activities including organizing meetings, dialogues and stakeholder workshops.
  • Contribute to building positive relationships with key stakeholders in the sanitation sector such as the local government, civil society and marginalized communities in Wa.
  • Contribute to data collection through key informant interviews and focus group discussions with local communities from different groups including informal actors within the sanitation service chain, marginalized groups and other relevant actors.
  • Contribute to the authorship of key research outputs including, but not limited to, research papers, journal articles, technical or policy briefs and blogs.
  • Undertake relevant assignments as requested by the project leader.

Duration: 80 days during the period December 2021 to mid-August 2023

Requirements

  • A PhD in Social Sciences, Sociology, Gender and Youth, Political Science or related fields
  • Experience in research for development, preferably in Ghana, in areas such as water and sanitation for inclusive economic development, understanding issues of marginality and gender and social inclusion around safely managed sanitation.
  • Experience in working on research for development projects and collaborating with multiple partners to deliver policy influence and practical results.
  • Experience in transforming research results into knowledge products that have impact and reach, including through communication at major conferences and via other platforms, including social media.
  • Specific experience in developing safely managed sanitation and circular economy pathways preferred, especially in Ghana.
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods in the field of social science and gender research, particularly in the areas of policy, impact evaluation, institutions and governance issues of water and sanitation.
  • Knowledge and experience of water and sanitation challenges for rural and urban sectors in Ghana from a gender and social exclusion context.
  • Experience in developing locally appropriate innovations around safely managed sanitation and developing a process on how these innovations can be facilitated to be socio-culturally acceptable and socially inclusive would be a plus.
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to explain complex issues clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of relevant languages in Wa would be an advantage.
