Local recruitment: Spatial Analyst / Web developer




Confluvio is an international consulting company focused on hydro-ecological research, nature conservation, and policy applications. Confluvio, in collaboration with World Wildlife Fund for Nature (US), is conducting a ‘Free-flowing River Analysis’ in the Mekong Region, as part of the USAID-funded project “Wonders of the Mekong” (https://www.usaid.gov/cambodia/fact-sheets/wonders-mekong). This Free-flowing River analysis feeds into a larger research project focused on improving understanding of the legacy of human activities on freshwater biodiversity in the Mekong Region.

Confluvio is seeking a creative, experienced, and motivated Spatial Analyst / Web Mapping Developer to join our team for 5 months and help design and implement an interactive web mapping project. Working remotely, the successful candidate will be expected to embrace this job with a positive attitude, willingness to learn new skills, software and coding libraries, and a passion for creating impactful and inspiring maps and other information products.

In detail, the candidate will a) translate complex geographic datasets into a format to be used in a web mapping application; b) is tasked with developing an interactive website to deploy the data layers; and c) will also develop the specific interactions needed to gain insightful information from the data layers using client-side JavaScript.

This position will provide a unique training opportunity for the candidate to learn important digital skills and will expose the candidate to a large, donor-funded development project.

To fulfill the requirements of the DS4Y supported position, the prospective candidate is required to be:

  • 30 years of age or younger
  • unemployed, under employed, or a student/recent graduate
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status
Details of position:
  • Pay Rate: $3200-4200 gross monthly payment (depending on experience), plus 4% vacation pay paid out monthly
  • Hours of Work: Flexible, 5 hours / week
  • Work Location: Online (home office-based)
  • Anticipated Start Date: December 1st, 2021
  • Contract length: 5 months
Essential Qualifications:
  • Post-secondary education; Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environment, Geography, Informatics, Web design, or related fields preferred
  • Portfolio demonstrating advanced experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), programming languages (JavaScript / Python), web pages, databases relevant to processing geodata layers or building interactive web pages
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent information organizational skills
  • Competent working with ArcGIS Pro, ArcMAP, QGIS or equivalent software programs
  • Knowledge of Python or JavaScript
  • Competent working with Microsoft Office & Google Suite programs
  • Ability to work both independently and as a supportive member of the Confluvio team
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with Leaflet / MapBox, or OpenLayers
  • Experience using Python / ESRI’s ArcPy
  • Experience working with spatial datasets including Vector Tiles
Working conditions:

The candidate will work remotely and full-time, under the direct joint supervision of Confluvio staff. Position work-plan and timeline are to be mutually agreed upon by the candidate and the supervisor.
